Hosea and Gomer (The Play)

Setting The Scene Act I

We have been looking at the Olivet Discourse

The preterits view of this is that the Israelite people were judged and found guilty in ad70 with the destruction of the temple God abandons His people

at this time the chosen people became the church, you and I

and the Israelites and the nation are no longer God’s people

in the second act of this play it appears that this is true

God is putting on a play for the people of Israel

and every play has a good cast of Actors

first we have Hosea he is a prophet to Israel

God has given him the script of being God

God has given Gomer the script of being Israel

Then we have their children we will meet them later

but this play is not a one time affair

this play will go on for the rest of their lives

this play is for all the world to see and

hopefully Israel will see themselves a in this play and repent of their sin

The Wife and Children Act II

V 1

God speaks to Hosea

V 2

people are mixed concerning Gomer

Has God told Hosea to get a wife from the red light district

go marry someone who is already a prostitute?

or a woman who is a virgin who God knows will become a prostitute

but the theme of this play is the love that Hosea has for Gomer even though she does evil

representing the love God has for His people

even though Israel over and over has prostituted herself to other gods

V 3

the happy couple has married and had their first child

V 4 name him Jezreel to scatter

we wont go into all of what is implied here but at the end

it says I will cause the house of Israel to cease

to be enslaved by the evil Assyrian army

the same that Jonah refused to go to and preach to

V 5

Take away their protection and power

V 6

the second child is born a girl this time

God tells Hosea to name her not-loved

and that He wont have compassion on Israel

He will not forgive Israel

V 7 but He will still have compassion on Judah

God will do the fighting for them

they wont have to fight for themselves

think on this

Israel the northern tribes will be slaughtered by the Assyrians and go into exile

Judah on the other hand wont have to lift a finger to defend themselves from the Assyrians

Senacarib

V 8-9

you are not my people

I am not your God

this is quite a blow

since Moses at the burning bush

I Am that I Am is your God

now for the first time in thousands of years I Am is not their God

and if this is how this tragedy ends

if the curtain on this play closes and the lights come on

we could assume God is all done with Israel as a nation and as a people

especially with what happened with Jesus

Redemption Act III

V 10

YET a change a turn around

sand of the sea

in that place, in the place of captivity

where ever they are in the world

even today there are many christians who say the Israelites are not the people of God

that God has abandoned them and will not have anything to do with them

But that is not God’s promise to Abraham

Genesis 17:7–8 LSB

“And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your seed after you. “And I will give to you and to your seed after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

V10-11

Where its said to them

they will be brought back into the land

they will become a new nation

they will be again the apple of the eye of God

and this is what is going on today in Israel

even though most are not saved today in Israel

Israel today is a very secular country

they have a form of godliness but no power

that will be coming in chapter two of Hosea

on the second half of the play

but for now

Let’s Bring This Home

God made Hosea’s life a play for everyone to watch and learn

Gave him an unfaithful wife

Children with unloving names

Hosea had to live like this by God’s decree

I’m sure there was a lot of heartache

people saying to him you got what you deserve

Hosea’s God given job was to be the best husband and father that he could be

God has given us roles he wants us to play

These role are for the world to be the audience of

we are conducting our own play

and this play is unique to each and everyone of us as believers

we are to be the best

the world is watching to see how a Christian handles being sick

How a Godly person hears and responds to tragedy

how a Godly woman lives with cancer

God puts us in situations every day to live a Godly life

and represent Jesus despite the affliction He is putting us through

How can I use the difficulty in my life to expand the Kingdom of God

We are the leading actor in the play of life

God, the cast director has given us the talent to be the best person for the drama which is called “My Life”

the world is watching and it’s our job to give the performance of a lifetime.
