The Joy of Humility

Pray
We have already noticed that Paul is familiar with the people at the church in Philippi. He knows them.
Paul about to dive into this idea of unity through humility.
He already touched on it a little bit in Chapter one.
Philippians 1:27 “27 Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel,”
Is unity important in the Church?
Paul deeply cared for this Church and is writing to them to say be united.
A Church must stand together if it wants to stand Firm for Christ!
1620 A house divided against itself cannot stand.
Abraham Lincoln (Sixteenth President of the United States)
Matthew 12:25 CSB
25 Knowing their thoughts, he told them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is headed for destruction, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.
Abraham Lincoln was quoting Jesus.
So as a church we must stand united or we will fall.
How do we stand united? While I am glad you asked because that is what we are going to get into in chapter 2.
Philippians 2:1–2 CSB
1 If, then, there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
If you know Jesus do this!
Why will this make Paul’s joy complete?
Paul know that if the Church is united the result is Kingdom work.
We really have you main goal, “MAKE HEAVEN CROWDED”.
Philippians 2:3–4 CSB
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. 4 Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.
This one is hard for all of us even though we don’t want to say it out load.
There was a Mom, Dad, and son driving home from church. Mom started first “I don’t really like the music today” then the Dad “Yeah and the preaching was a little flat today”. The son in the back seat says “Dad what to you expect for two dollars”?
We as people always look at things base on how it makes us feel. What we think about it.
So how do we change this? How can we consider others as more important than ourselves?
The answer is Christ like Humility.
Philippians 2:5–8 CSB
5 Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. 7 Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, 8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.
What is this Christ Jesus attitude that we are to adopt?
Let look at an example of this attitude in an other passage of scripture.
John 13:4–9 CSB
4 So he got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing, took a towel, and tied it around himself. 5 Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 “You will never wash my feet,” Peter said. Jesus replied, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”
The person that washed feet in the house was the lowest servant in the house.
Jesus made him self the lowest servant for our benefit to make us clean.
“but afterward you will understand”
To be a servant of Jesus you must humble your self.
How much did Jesus Humble himself?
“to the point of death even to death on a cross”
Romans 12:1 CSB
Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
Philippians 2:9–11 CSB
9 For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
THE NAME OF JESUS!!!
Upside down way of Jesus make yourself less in order to be made more.
Everyone will bow and confess the important part is when!
Invitation
Some of us need to joyfully humble ourself for the LORD’s work today.
There may be someone here that has not bow down and confess Jesus as LORD. Don’t wait until your made to because at that point it is to late.
