Bible Passage: John 8:31-36
Bible Passage: John 8:31-36
What is freedom?
Miriam Websters Dictionary
1 : the quality or state of being free: such as
A: the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action
B: liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another
C: independence
d: the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous freedom from care
I think everyone of us in this room today would say we are thankful for our freedom. We are thankful for the men and women that have fought both in the military and politcally to ensure that we as a nation remain free.
As great as earthly freedom is and as thankful as we are to live in a free nation, there is a superior freedom found only in Jesus Christ.
In this passage Jesus in his usual manner makes a shocking statement to the Jewish religious community. Jesus claims they are slaves but that he can set them free.
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 “We are descendants of Abraham,” they answered him, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus responded, “Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
35 A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
Freedom in Christ vs. Earthly freedom
1.Earthly freedom only frees you while you are living. As soon as you are dead, freedom is no longer valid.
26 For what will it benefit someone if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will anyone give in exchange for his life?
2. Earthly freedom frees you to pursue outward actions. Yet you are still lead in your pursuits by your sinful heart.
13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.
3. Earthly freedom is never sure and can be taken away by a change in government, a conquering nation or as we have seen in recent years a pandemic or disaster.
Freedom in Christ
Freedom in Christ is eternal, it frees you from death.
2 because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
2. Freedom in Christ changes your heart. It gives you the freedom to pursue what is good and what is eternal.
3. Freedom in Christ cannot be taken away by any earthly means. It is given to those who by faith turn in repentance and submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.
14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.
15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
Sin is deceptive. Sin warps your mind, so that you believe that you are in control.
