Peace within the Lord
Peace within the Lord
My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord:
My heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
Yea, the sparrow hath found an house,
And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young,
Even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house:
They will be still praising thee. Selah.
Opening
Opening
So I want you to think about what a perfect day would be for you right now
I want to first thank y’all for allowing me back and giving me this chance to come and share God’s word with Y’all
Some might say going fishing
Hanging out with family
Going to the lake
Taking a nap all day
Mine would be waking up and going fishing in the morning then going to play a little golf and then a crawfish boil to end it
So I asked this question for something a little bit later in the message
Today we will be in Psalm 84 starting in V2-V4
First things first we are going to break the passage down and then after we do that we will look at the application
Starting in V2: My soul Longs even faints for the court of the Lord
My soul longs
soul means windpipe/breathing
stumped me at first but then clicked
my soul wants to be with you more than I want to breathe
My souls ultimate desire is to be in the presence of the Lord
That is my souls want
That is what my soul is searching for
The courts of the Lord
Yes, Even faints
If we look at the Hebrew word for faint it means to come to an end
So what they psalmist is saying here
My souls will come to an end for the courts of the Lord
My soul is in other words worthless without the lord
The Lord is what gives our souls and lives meaning and hope
My Heart and my flesh cry out for the Living God
His heart and his flesh
Every inch of his body has a desire to be with the Lord
There isn’t a part that doesn’t
Even his fleshly side is crying out to be with the Lord
When are we going to be in a place where even our most sinful part of our body is crying out to be in the presence of the Lord
Usually when I sin I like to run like Adam and Eve
I like to try and hid my sin from God
because bringing your sin to God brings conviction
That is why a lot of people run
I’m not a big fan of conviction until I realize I’ve been set free
When are we going to be in a place where our most sinful part is in the presence of the Lord
Or in a place where we want to be with the Lord even when we sin
Then we get to Living God
And man is that a great phrase
Because the psalmist realizes that we serve a God who is alive
That is the difference in us and other religion is we serve a God who is alive
And is active in our lives
He isn’t taking a backseat
He isn’t absent in our lives
But he’s present
Who was, who is, and who is to come
That is our God
That is our living God
even the sparrow has found a home
The psalmist is showing us that the living God is active in our life
The sparrow is a living creature and God has made a way for it
So if the Lord provides for the sparrow what makes us think he won’t provide for us
This makes me think of the sermon on the mount
Jesus teaches the lord provides for the birds and clothes the lily’s so why should we be anxious
And i think that is the the psalmist is teaching here
V2 explains the desire to be with God And how we need God
V 3-4 explain why we need God
Because in his presence is peace
Which it’s important because this generation we live in suffers from anxiety and depression
We long for peace
Peace of mind
The psalmist is saying here that peace comes from the presence of God
Where do you feel the most at peace
When you’ve had a long day at work
Long day at school
At the end of church camp when you’ve been there a week
Where do you want to go
Your home which is where the Sparrow is
Even a simple bird can have peace in the Lord so we can to
But catch on to the word found
This word lets us know that we won’t just stumble upon peace
We won’t accidentally find it
We have to search for it
But we have to search for it in the Lord
This world brings us a false peace
That is where we find anxiety and depression
God brings us a true peace
You can pray for peace and the Lord will give you opportunity’s to find it but we have to find it in Him
We find it by keeping our eyes on the Lord
Rember when peter walked on water he felt peace when keeping his eyes on Jesus
Took his eyes off and he sank
But when he sank look who was there to save him
Just like everytime we run from God or take our eyes off of him he is right there to save us
In the midst of the storm when the deciples woke Jesus he brought peace in the midst of the storm
The sparrow has found a home means the sparrow has found peace in the Lord
And the swallow a nest for her young
This relates to parents
Where do you find the most comfortable with your kids
At home
The peace of knowing they are safe at home not out getting in trouble
And the Lord provides that for parents
O Lord of HOSTS
Most scholars believe that David wrote this psalm
Which makes sense because this word Hosts means
Military hosts and David was a military leader
So knowing that the psalmist is saying Lord you are over all of the military
That is peaceful to think about that the Lord is over all things
My King and My God
Not just any king and any God but the God
My God
David is showing personal relation
In this world that is how we stay in step with God
Having that relationship with him
Know him and My God
Because knowing him as my friends God wont get you anywhere
You have o know him personally in order to experience true peace
For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,
Than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Bring this back to what i started with which was what is a perfect day to you
The reason i asked this is because the psalmist is saying he would rather be in the presence of God for one day than a thousand anywhere else
The psalmist is saying he would trade a thousand Of the best days in order to spend one day in the courts of the Lord
But not just anyone a doorkeeper
The Lowest of Low position in the kingdom
Rather than spend a thousand in tents which were their houses back then
He would keep a door for one day than be able to stay in a house for thousand days
That’s crazy to think about I don’t know if any of us would say i would trade a thousand of my perfect days to spend one day as a door keeper
That is seeking God with all you have and consider everything else in life as pointless
As Paul says in Philippians 3 that he considers all things dung compared to what Christ has to offer
Closing
We should seek God with all of our body and spirit
Even when we sin still seek God
When tough times happen seek God
He brings us true peace
Not like the world does but true peace
Find your peace in the presence of God
And be willing to give up what you want because sometimes what you want doesn’t bring peace
Or bring you closer to God
And if you are here today and you don’t know who this Jesus and God is than please talk to someone and ask questions
He will bring you peace in your life
