I hope everyone has been having a great summer. It is really starting to heat up here in Oklahoma, as it typically does around this time of year. Today, as we continue our series on Apologetics, we are going to studying the question “Is The Bible True?” Having looked at our last study of determining if we can know God exists we will dive into the claim in the bible that it is from God.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…
And like this verse the bible does not shy away from declaring it is from God throughout it.
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
Paul even declared he was told what to write and preach in 1 Corinthians 2:10-16.
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
Now someone would and should rightfully say that, “just because the bible claims to be inspired and from God does not prove it true.” And this is true which is why God told Paul to write in 1 Thessalonians 5:21…
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
So how do we go about proving this. There are several ways but we will focus on a few of them.
First, let’s focus on what I consider the most powerful of internal proofs there are because it leaves no doubt to the person actually concerned with determining truth. That is the fact that the bible is not “a book” but “a canon.” This means it isn’t written by one person but multiple people. Not only that it was written over a period of 1,400 years with around 40 or so different authors. Now you can give two people all the details you want them to write “about” but as soon as you tell them to use those details and write a store based on those details they will contradict each other at some point.
Yet the bible has “zero” contradictions; not a single one. Now wait a minute Landon, I can google contradictions in the bible and find an endless list of one’s people have found. Have they really found a contradiction though? The answer is no, because a contradiction, by definition, is something that cannot be harmonized. In other words, for something to be a contradiction it cannot have “any way” to show it “could happen” the bible says it could.
Let me illustrate this. Let’s say two people are standing at a crosswalk where there is a stop light when they both look up from their phones at the same time they hear a truck speeding through the red light, hit a person crossing the street, and drive off. When the police arrive they ask for a description of the car. One said the truck was red while the other person said the truck was blue. Now, many would call this a contradiction but if each person were standing on the opposite sides of the crosswalk and thus street when the truck went by they would only see half of the truck. And if one side of the truck was red and the other half was blue because it was a company truck this would no longer be a contradiction.
This is what happens with the supposed contradictions in the bible, people say they contradict because they are not saying the exact same thing but upon further study one can easily see they do not contradict each other but have a clear path to harmony.
Second, we can know the bible is inspired from God and thus true because it has never been proven to tell a lie historically.
Even when people think the bible is lying about someone or something, because archaeologist haven’t yet discovered it they always get proven wrong. Let me list a few of these sort of things that cause people to say the bible was not true until it was eventually proven the bible was right.
King David, a central figure in the Old Testament, had zero extra-biblical evidence to have existed until 1993-1994 when the Tel Dan excavation took place in northern Israel and uncovered a 9th century BC Aramaic victory stele inscribed with the phrase “House of David.”
Kings Mesha & Omri was believed to be made up by the authors of the bible when it talked about the battles between the Moabites and Israelites (2 Kings 3). Yet in 1868 in Dibon, Jordan the Mesha Stele was discovered which discussed Israel, King Omri, and the conflicts between the two nations.
Pontius Pilate was known to exist during Jesus’ day but it was believed by skeptics that the bible was lying about his title and role in Judah. That is until 1961 when a limestone inscription was found in Caesarea Maritima bearing Pilate’s name and title “Perfect of Judea.”
It’s no wonder the bible has no problem proclaiming it is true, because it is 100% true.
160 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.
5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
30 As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
Simply put The Bible Is True and we can trust it’s holy message.
