During a
secret night visit
Jesus spoke these
famous words to
great rabbi in Israel
name Nicodemus:
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Since then,
many have debated
what it really means
to be born again.
Today,
we study concept
born again.
conversion.
For our case studies
we will look at
some individuals
who were closest
to Jesus.
We pick up the story
at the last supper...
Jesus knows
he is about to die.
He has some
unfinished business
with disciples.
one Last supper.
But what has
already happened?
Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.
Very scary text.
This is a man:
who followed Jesus.
always with him.
cast out demons.
preached great sermons.
respected among peers.
leader among disciples.
a great spiritual leader.
Bible says
Satan entered into him…
John says same:
During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
Both are clear
Judas heart
run by Satan…
Let’s go back
in time slightly.
Preparation for meal:
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.”
Peter and John
were supposed to
make all things ready.
Everybody get there.
Only one problem.
No servant
to was feet…
Context:
A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
Here they are
arguing about
who is greatest…
Certainly,
if you wash feet
you lose argument.
Jesus tries to tell them:
And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.
But they don’t get it.
So
He lives it.
He examples it.
rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
In their mind,
masters are served.
Servants are
lower people.
He tells them:
For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
He tells them:
True leader serves.
He goes on:
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them,
—
“Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
--
For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
He washes all their feet.
How many?
all?
even Peter?
(denier)
even Judas?
(betrayer)
Jesus died for
all sinners
repentant or not…
After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
They all ask,
“Is it me?”
John sitting
next to Jesus.
Simon says,
“ask him who..”
Jesus say,
“the one I give this bread to.”
He gives it to Judas.
Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
Again,
Same concept as before.
Bible says:
“Satan entered into him”
Must be
very important
for us to understand.
But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!”
Jesus already knew
Judas betrayed him.
Yet,
Jesus washed his feet.
Some may think,
I don’t have right
to communion.
Jesus longs to
forgive and cleanse.
So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
EGW says:
Night it was to the traitor as he turned away from Christ into the outer darkness. – DA Page 654
Judas goes out
into darkness
physically.
spiritually.
Judas walks out
hand-in-hand
with Satan.
Many imagine:
Judas bad guy.
Others good.
One betrayer.
11 good ones.
Now,
they are pure…
Not Really!
Judas Gone.
Jesus talks to Peter.
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
Satan already entered Judas...
Now,
Jesus says, “Peter,
he wants you too.”
He says,
“you are unconverted!”
Peter argues
with him.
Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”
In other words.
Peter says:
“I love you more
than other disciples!”
Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
I would never
deny you!
I’m ready for
prison
death
anything.
Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”
But Peter says
no I wont…
Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
Won’t accept
Jesus’ prophecy.
But, of course,
Jesus is right...
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it before them all, saying,
—
“I do not know what you mean.” And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter,
—
“Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Just as Jesus said:
“you are not converted”
3.5 years
with Jesus
= unconverted!!!
But what about
after resurrection,
few days later?
Jesus resurrected
Peter went back to fishing
(stopped fishing for men)
Jesus finds them
at the lake
another great catch miracle.
After eating together
Jesus talks with Peter.
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
Before...
Peter said
“everyone else will
betray you, not me!”
Now...
Jesus asks,
“do you love me
more than them?”
Peter knows.
He refers to
last supper
conversation.
Cuts him to
his heart…
Does not profess
to be best.
Just says,
“You know I love you.
He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
Ask again..
Same answer…
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Jesus asks
Tree times.
Why?
Betrayed 3 times.
At the last supper
Jesus said,
“You are unconverted…”
[But,]
“when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren.”
Jesus told him before
you are not converted.
When you are,
“encourage the brethren.”
Afterward,
tells him:
“Feed my sheep…”
In other words,
what has happened?
Peter has been
converted!!!
3.5 year = unconverted
Few days = converted
