Title of the Message this Morning is:

Your Work Matters

Big Idea:
Every believer is divinely called, uniquely gifted, and purposed to glorify God in their work, no matter their vocation.
Key Scripture: Colossians 3:23-24
Prayer:
“Father, thank You for the gift of work.
Help us to see the purpose You’ve given us and to glorify You in all that we do.
Remind us that no role is insignificant in Your Kingdom.
May we serve diligently, as unto You, trusting that You are working through us for Your glory.”
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)

Introduction

Have you ever wondered, “Does what I do every day really matter?”
Maybe you feel like your job is mundane, or that your role in life is small compared to others.
Perhaps you’ve questioned whether your work— in an office, at home, or in schoolhas any eternal value…Any real significance.
If you’ve ever thought this way, you’re not alone.
But let me challenge you with this truth:
God has a divine purpose for your work.
No matter how ordinary it may seem, your work matters deeply to Him.
In Colossians 3:23-24, Paul writes to the early church:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
This passage shows us three important truths:
First, you were created on purpose for a purpose.
Second, your highest calling is to glorify God in all you do.
And third, there are no unimportant jobs or roles in the Kingdom of God
It’s all unto the service and glory of Christ.
Let’s explore these truths together.

Main Teaching

Created on Purpose for a Purpose

Pastor -
You might want to share here about your first job - or a job you had that felt really mundane and ordinary.
My very first job was a Newspaper Carrier.
The Newspaper Company at that time was called: The Herald Examiner.
I would get up early in the morning to separate my papers, and put them in my bag, and put them on my bike, and deliver the papers to the newspaper customers in my area.
One of the biggest challenge was the Sunday paper was much larger and we would meet at the Los Angeles Coliseum to sell papers to the people who were attending the game.
I didn't think much of it then but later I realized that this was the door that was open for many other jobs to come.
Read Genesis 1:27
The Bible tells us that every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
You are not an accident.
You are God’s workmanship, uniquely designed for a specific purpose. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:10:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
And the Psalmist says in Psalm 139:13-14;
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Think about that:
Before you were even born, God prepared work for you to do as He was creating you!
Your job, your relationships, your daily tasksthey all have a divine purpose because you are purposed.
You are part of God’s bigger plan.

Illustration:

Consider the life of Joseph in the Old Testament.
Joseph’s journey was anything but smooth.
He was sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned.
Yet through it all, God had a purpose for his work.
As a slave in Potiphar’s house, Joseph worked diligently.
As a prisoner, he faithfully interpreted dreams.
And eventually, Joseph’s work led him to become second-in-command in Egypt, saving countless lives during a famine.
Joseph’s story reminds us that no matter where we are, God can use our work for His glory.
With these truths in mind, ask yourself, “How has God uniquely gifted me to serve Him?”
Reflect on how your current role, no matter how small it seems, fits into God’s plan.
And what is our purpose?
What is our call? To glorify God in all we do…

Our Highest Calling: To Glorify God in All We Do

Paul’s words in Colossians 3:23 are clear:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
This means that our work is not ultimately for a paycheck, a promotion, or human recognition.
Our work is an act of worship to God
We are a living sacrifice as Paul writes to the Roman church in Romans 12:1.
Everything we do, everyday we live, and everywhere we go… it’s all for His glory and good.
As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:31,
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
When we approach our work with this mindset, even the most mundane tasks take on eternal significance.
Even the nastiest jobs can be redeemed at the feet of Jesus, submitted to His calling and purpose.
Martin Luther once said,
“The maid who sweeps her kitchen is doing the will of God just as much as the monk who prays—not because she may sing a Christian hymn as she sweeps but because God loves clean floors.”
This reminds us that all work, when done for God’s glory, is meaningful.
Illustration #2
In my early 20s I remember working at a place called Price Pfister.
It was called Price Pfister until 2010, It was an American manufacturer of bathroom and lavatory faucets, shower systems, showerheads and accessories.
When I first worked there I was on the manufacturer's lineup where we polish the the showerheads and faucets.
It was okay for factory work, but I left and came back much later on, and was offered a different type of job working in the chimney portion of the factory were I was asked to clean out the black soot.
It was a very un-dignified job.

Illustration:

Consider the example of Jesus Himself.
For most of His life, Jesus worked as a carpenter.
He likely built tables, chairs, and other household items.
Yet this work was not separate from His mission; it was part of His obedience to the Father.
Jesus’ life shows us that all work, when done with the right heart, can glorify God
Or put another way, if ordinary work was good enough for Jesus, then it’s good enough for you and I as well.
As you consider Jesus, let it shift your perspective:
Instead of seeing your work as a chore, view it as an opportunity to glorify God.
Ask yourself,
“How can I reflect God’s character in the workplace?
In my family?
As a volunteer?
Perhaps it’s through integrity, kindness, or excellence.
Perhaps it’s simply about showing up and being consistent.
Whatever it is, remember this; there’s no unimportant Jobs or giftings in God’s Kingdom.

No Unimportant Jobs or Giftings in the Kingdom of God

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, Paul writes:
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.”
Every role, every gift, every job is important in the Kingdom of God.
Whether you’re a teacher, a nurse, a stay-at-home parent, or a business owner, your work has value.
Your work matters.
Pastor - could you take some time here to highlight some of the different jobs and roles in your church as a way to highlight how everyone is important and that everyone is working together for a common purpose.

Illustration:

Think about the body of Christ.
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul compares the church to a body with many parts.
Each part has a specific function, and no part is more important than the other.
Just as a hand cannot say to the foot, “I don’t need you,” no job or role in God’s Kingdom is insignificant.
Quote:
Dorothy Sayers, a Christian writer, once said,
“The only Christian work is good work well done.”
This means that the quality of your work matters, no matter the job… and this quote takes us all the way back to our main verse for the day; Colossians 3:23-24.
Read Colossians 3:23-24
Take some time to identify the unique ways God has gifted you and ask how you can use those gifts to serve Him.
How are you already using your gifts and talents?
Where can you apply them even more?
In addition to this, let’s encourage others in their work.
Let someone know that their contributions, no matter how small, are valuable.
Let someone else know that they are seen.
We sometimes we forget to encourage others for thier contributions.
Why is that so true?

Conclusion

As we’ve seen today, your work matters to God and you were created on purpose for a purpose.
Your work is an act of worship that glorifies God.
And there are no unimportant jobs or roles in His Kingdom.
So, as you head into the week, I want to challenge you with this:
Commit your work to the Lord.
Pray over it.
Ask God to use it for His glory.
And remember the promise in
Proverbs 16:3: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
Closing Illustration:
Imagine a tapestry.
From the back, it looks like a chaotic mess of threads.
But when you turn it around, you see a beautiful picture.
In the same way, God is weaving together every aspect of your life
your work, your relationships, your strugglesinto something beautiful for His glory.
Trust Him with the work He has given you.

Let us Pray

Salvation:

The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Communion

I want to take a few moments to give you the opportunity to ask forgiveness of any sin in your life.
Let us pray over the elements (Cross Exposed) in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost
Read 1 Corinthians 11:23- 26 - (Taking the elements together)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (take bread)
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (Take Cup)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
