Introduction

Recap first two chapters
Chapter 1 - the call of Hosea
go and marry
have children
Jezreel - Hosea’s - judgment is coming
Lo-Ruhamah - No compassion
Lo-Ammi - Not my people
Chapter 2 - The sin of Gomer
chases after lovers she thinks is giving her everything
her way will be made dificult
believes that everything she has is from her false lovers
The Lord has given them and will remove so that she knows where they are from
She has forgotten her husband
So the Lord will call her out and speak tenderly to her
she will forget her evil masters and know the Lord
Today - The Price Paid for God’s People
Gomer is has gotten enslaved
some believe that this is a different angle to the call in chapter 1,
explaining how Hosea took his wife
I do not believe this to be the case
Hosea has taken a wife, she continually has betrayed their marriage
the Lord is giving another command for Hosea
this will be the end of the comparison to Hosea / Gomer to the of the Lord and Israel
Hosea 3:1–5 CSB
1 Then the Lord said to me, “Go again; show love to a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the Israelites though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.” 2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and nine bushels of barley. 3 I said to her, “You are to live with me many days. You must not be promiscuous or belong to any man, and I will act the same way toward you.” 4 For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, and without ephod or household idols. 5 Afterward, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come with awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the last days.

The Love for God’s People

God’s love is not based on anything that we have to offer
God owns the cattle on a thousand hills
we love this verse and take it to mean that there is nothing that God cannot provide for us
it is about our worship and it should come from the heart because there is nothing we have that is going to enrich him
he owns the cattle on a thousand hills… if he were in need, hungry, he would not tell you
it is in spite of our sin, not because of our obedience, that God loves us
my grandson was here this last week, do I love him because he is perfect
he is my grandson, does he enrich me… I spend more when he is here
Hosea 3:1 CSB
1 Then the Lord said to me, “Go again; show love to a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the Israelites though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.”
We cannot out sin the love of God
Not that all are saved regardless of sin and repentance
but only those who call on the Lord
Romans 10:13 CSB
13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
You are not so sinful that the blood of Christ cannot cleanse you
everyone means all people, everyone is anyone
Gomer / Israel have not only cheated, but they live with their adulterous lover
they have moved on and moved out
we never seem to realize how fast sin entangles us
God’s love has not ended for his people
Because it was not based on them
he did not look on them, bless them, choose them because they were obedient
he called them small and stubborn from the start
He chose to love us and proved his live for us on the cross
Romans 5:8 CSB
8 But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The Price for God’s People

What would you pay… a question that depends on the item being purchased
I have a silver coin that I purchased at auction
price of silver at the time was around $30 / ounce
I paid more than that, not because it would be an investment, but because it has George Brett on it
you have your thing that you might over pay the value
what would you pay for your kids, your spouse…
you might say that it depends on the day
that is funny, but why… because we know that there are days where they might not be perfect
You and I have a debt owed, a debt paid, never to be paid again
Hosea 3:2 CSB
2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and nine bushels of barley.
We do not know why Gomer was up for sale
the text simply says that he bought her
most believe that it was a slave auction,
that she had sold herself in to sex slavery
but do not let this pass without noticing the sinfulness of others involved
the world will have no trouble helping you sin
Price paid; value of the silver and barley would be the price of a slave
We are only free because of the price Jesus paid
Our freedom is not to do as we please
we are free to live for the Lord, with the power of the Lord
that is the only way that we can obey all that God has called to do
The price was paid without hesitation
Hosea went and paid the price without hesitation
imagine bartering over the price for your spouse
Christ paid with more than the price of a slave
1 Peter 1:18–19 CSB
18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.
Jesus gladly paid the price to ransom his bride
I am sure that Satan told him what it would cost… your life
to which he said, that will be fine
an excited Satan was disappointed three days later

The Exclusivity of God’s People

Shema -
Nothing in our lives is to match the love and desire that we are to have for the Lord
we are called to be exclusively with God
how do we know if that is the case
what is the first thing you think about when you wake up, the first thing you have to look at
your phone, your coffee, your kids, work
love the lord with all your heart, soul, and might… teach this diligently to your kids
the way you look at your relationship with the Lord is what you are teaching your kids
Hosea 3:3–4 CSB
3 I said to her, “You are to live with me many days. You must not be promiscuous or belong to any man, and I will act the same way toward you.” 4 For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, and without ephod or household idols.
He gets to name the conditions, he bought her
this sounds cold and brutal, especially in view of our world
at the same time, does it really sound harsh
you were my wife, you enslaved yourself, I bought you back
not I am asking you to simply be what you were… my wife
notice that the conditions are not that difficult
do not be promiscuous, be my wife
do not be with anyone else
the simplicity of it, just like, you shall not have any other gods before me
worship no other, yet time and time we chase after different things
He set the standard when he delivered the slaves from Egypt
10 commandments
no other gods before me
no idols
For He is a jealous God
Christ paid the price for our sin and we attempt to set the conditions for our freedom
How many have told the Lord, I will follow you if…
I will obey your command, but I need assurance that you are going to take care of me, provide for me
so what has the lord called for you to do, what yoke is he putting on you for the price he paid for you
Matthew 11:28–30 CSB
28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus is your Lord, or he is not, there are no part time, conditional Christians

The Promises for God’s People

Promise of redemption, renewal and eternity
It is those that put on this yoke that get to taste and see that the lord is good
that will live in the promises of God
Hosea 3:5 CSB
5 Afterward, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come with awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the last days.
After a time they will seek the Lord and David their King
an important to look to the future of Israel
Shows reunification of God’s people
there will no longer be the two kingdoms
David their king = son of David = Messiah
Language of Israel, last days
Last days… prophets often used this phrase to indicate when things were made right
speaking of the end of time
The NT tells us who Israel is
Galatians 3:27–29 CSB
27 For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. 28 There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.
We who believe in Jesus and submit to him as his disciples, are the seed of Abraham, the people that are his descendants that were promised to him
How does this work, is that not just word games
Romans 11:24–26 CSB
24 For if you were cut off from your native wild olive tree and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these—the natural branches—be grafted into their own olive tree? 25 I don’t want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you will not be conceited: A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, The Deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
Why this rabbit trail of NT verses…
That is how we understand the text before us
You and I have disobeyed the Lord, spiritually committed adultery and enslaved ourselves to our sin
Jesus came and lived a perfect life to ransom his people
those that confess that he is Lord, believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead will be saved
Paul tells us those people are the true children of Abraham, who the covenant is with
that in the last days we will be with him in awe of him and his goodness
Memory Verse
1 Peter 1:18–19 CSB
18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.
