Why read OT?
If Christ and NT is what leading to
why concern with old?
Real sense NT more imp
better know Christ, need OT
one way is this:
Christs actions like words/language (fitting since He is word)
words understood only by how culture uses
dont know what Christ means by some of his acts w/o culture of OT
Not only helpful, but necessary:
indeed, as CCC 129 says ‘NT has to be read in light of Old’
heresy and misunderstanding Christ happens without it
such as the ancient Marcionite heresy as seeing God of OT judaism as cruel and evil that Christ came to abolish
Listen to Christ himself:
Matt 5:17. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill”
Matt 13:52. “every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old”
Main
Today Gospel example dont know whats happening w/o OT.
appoints 72 for his mission
remember, has his high priest Peter
has the select 3 high priest part of Peter, James, John
has his 12
now he appoints 72
w/o OT miss significance of the 1, 3, 12, and 72
remember a New Moses, a New Exodus is promised
when goes up with his select 3, Peter James and John they are told this
OT keeps prophesizing this too… New Exodus
remember the hierarchy of Moses which the rebels at Korah foolishly rejected as getting btwn them and God
Moses, head
Aaron, high priest
Aaron, Nadab, Abihu
12 heads of the 12 tribes
then theres the 72
Numb 11.
appoints 70 elders (literally word for priests in NT)
share God’s spirit prophecy and governance, but God adds 2 extra
[some texts 70, 72 in NT prob b/c reflecting uncertain number in OT]
guess how many priests made up the council in charge of religious authority at the time of Jesus?
you guessed it, 70.
It appears Jesus is establishing new authorities....
often idea Jesus going around disorganized and haphazardly.
if read OT obviously not case
but could easily miss it w/o reading it
an organization in the same likeness of the chosen people of Exodus
one that journeys to the True Holy Land
Conclusion
Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ
Our age have been given gift of education and literacy
read OT,
NT Gospels most imp, but read OT as well
if you want some easy commentary, read Dr. Brant Pitre
particularly first 5 books and book of Wisdom
read them in the new light of Christ
Word of God Incarnate
