John 17 - Jesus pray
Notes
Transcript
From teaching the disciples Jesus now, starts praying to the Father. Again, we get this amazing insight to how Jesus communicates with God, and how they glorify one another.
What does it mean for the disciples and for us? This passage of Jesus praying. For our prayers?
We lean what eternal life is. That Jesus is eternal with the father before the world began. – as John wrote in the introduction to John. That our mission is not to be taken out of the world, but to live in it as God protects us from the evil one, to be witnesses of Jesus by the Holy Spirt. And Peace is found in Christ and great Joy, as we read about last week. – But lest read and see what God will teach us by the Holy Spirt.
John 17.
Jesus had escaped many times in John because it was not his hour, - Jesus now pray the hour has come, - and a prayer unlike any, Jesus pray that the Father should Glorify Jesus, - so that Jesus can glorify God the father.
2 Jesus pray: because you game me authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given me.
3 what is eternal life: that people would know God the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. That is why Jesus was sent to earth, - to show who God is and that people might understand who Jesus is. – And that will give eternal life with God, knowing God and knowing Jesus, would lead to eternal life with God, in Christ Jesus. (quest for eternal life why? – If it is not spent with God – all around you will die – what is that worth? To live long and see ones loved ones die? – No, life with who? - With Jesus and God).
4. Jesus saying he glorified God on earth, by doing the works that God had given him to do. (We can do the same – so can the disciples – we have good works we can walk in and glorify God).
5 Shows Jesus existed before he entered the word, Jesus is from before the world began (eternal) with the father (introduction the word was with God and the word was God). That Jesus was in glory and with the father. And that Jesus is asking God to be in that place again. Jesus rightful place of power and glory.
6-7 Jesus saying that he has made God known to his disciples /the ones that was taken out of the world, and given to Jesus, they are Gods and they have kept Gods word, because they know that everything that Jesus gave was from God.
8 Jesus teaching Gods words to the disciples and they believe that they received Gods words, and the truth that Jesus was sent form God, and that God sent Jesus.
9. A prayer for the disciples: not the world, the disciples are Gods.
10 And also Jesus, because all God is Jesus’ and all of Jesus’ is Gods. – That Jesus is gloriedin the disciples, - because they heard and believed who God is and understood who Jesus is. (One more verse that shows the 3-1 relationship of the God head, Jesus and God own the same).
11 Jesus is leaving and prays a prayer for the disciples that (Holy Father) God would keep them in his name, - and that they will be one as God and Jesus are one. (unity in the Church and in the 3-1).
12 Jesus kept the disciples in God’s name, when he was with them, - the name God gave Jesus. And Jesus guarded them and all was kept Jesus is able to keep us in God by the Holy Spirt - except the son of destruction, so that the scripture will be fulfilled. (God’s plan and promises are true and will come true, God is Lord of all also the future).
13 Jesus pray that he is now going to his father out of the world, and he spoke God’s word in the world to the disciples that they will find Jesus’ joy filled them, for filled them. (What does that look like? In their life and in yours?) We see the disciples live with a joy that send them many places and they endured many tribulations and sorrow, and still the joy of Jesus Christ was in them… We see it also in Peter and Paul’s life, a life lived for God in the power of the Holy Spirt, with many problems and sorrows, but a joy no one could take from them. -We should ask ourself, do I have that joy? What is at the very core of your life? What motivates all you do? Is it who Jesus is? Is it something ells? If it is what is it? Could that be why we don’t have the Joy Jesus is talking about, because out knowledge of Jesus, is not what gives us this joy as the core of our life? If it is what an amazing joy it is, all I am and what I do is from who Jesus is and what he has done, - not me or my mission or agenda. No, Gods, and knowing Jesus, who and what he did – all this things Jesus said about the disciples, that we know Jesus is God and came from God, that all Jesus said is from God, the very words of God, that Jesus is in God and God in Jesus and they send the Holy Spirt to impower all the people that follow Jesus, to share who Jesus is with people that they might have this joy also. Does Jesus joy fill you? I pray you/we will experience this, every day.
14-15 Jesus gave them Gods words, and that made the world hate them, because they are not of this world, - Jesus’ dose not ask that God will take them out of the world but that God would keep them from the evil one. (Jesus was not of this world, and his followers was not, but they lived in the world, and Jesus is not asking God to take them out, but to protect them from the evil one), - we are in the same place as the disciples and early followers, not of this world buy in the world, and God has us here for a purpose, we have Jesus praying that God will protect us form the evil one… - Do we understand and see this, we are not here to escape but to do the works God has for us in Jesus joy to honor God, and Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirt.
16 repeated they are not of this world. – (not that they are aliens – but that they are for God and not for what the world stands for – are we of this world? Or are we for God?) What does this mean for you and how you see your life? If in Christ Jesus you are not of this world? If you are an alien, you will and should feel like one… would not fit in, people will see you as strange and an outcast. (If we fit in or long to fit in, we might have been tricked by the evil one, too follow his ways.) Our homeland is not where we come from in this world it is to be with God, in Christ Jesus. That is our homeland where are citizenships is in heaven. Our loyalty is not to this world, countries, it is to Jesus Christ our Lord God and savior.
17 make them Holy, in the truth, in God’s word, that is the truth, - Jesus. (Make them Holy in me, in your word). – is that one of our prayers – make me holy in your truth? Make me Holy in Christ today?
18 Jesus was sent now he send the disciples as the father sent him, -
19 Jesus making himself holy/consecrate himself, so that they will be made Holy, in the truth, in Jesus.
20-22 Jesus asks for many; for those who will believe through the disciple’s word, 21 that they all may be one, as Jesus and the father are one, (Father in Jesus and Jesus in the father). – that the world may know that God has send Jesus. (what does unity do? And splits and – what is in commen for all in Christ? It will be who Jesus is, and where he came from, and that he is God and spoke the word of God). Jesus gave the disciples the glory that God had given him, that the would be one even as Jesus and God are one.
23 That they may become perfectly one as we are to that the world, may know that God send Jesus, and that God loved them as God loved Jesus.
24 Jesus desire that the people God had given Jesus may be with Jesus to see his glory, that God had given him because he loved Jesus, before the foundation of the world,
25 Just and righteous Father, the world does not know you, - I know you prayes Jesus, and he disciples know that Jesus was send by God. Jesus made Gods name know to them, and will continue to make it known, so that the love that God loved Jesus with, will be in the disciples. – Wow… - (Have you experienced that love? The love God loved Jesus with? – what a prayer for the followers of Jesus). Prayer.
