El Shaddai - The Almighty Creator
Ezekiel 10:5 And the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard even in the outer court, like the voice of Almighty God when He speaks.
There are a few of the attributes of God that just seem to make sense. I hope all of you here today believe in God. Believing in God should come with some basic understanding of what it means to be God.
We believe that God is all powerful
We believe that God is all knowing
We believe that God is all wise
We believe that God is everywhere.
Those things are fundamental to what it means to be the Divine unless you have a pantheistic idea of God. That you think that there are many gods who are not all powerful. They don’t deserve your worship but El Shaddai does. A name that teaches us the attributes of YAHWEH! The God of the Bible The Great Three in One. Today we want to take a journey to a better understanding of the name El Shaddai.
Remember the song
El Shaddai, el Shaddai
El-elyon na Adonai
Age to age You're still the same
By the power of the name
El Shaddai, el Shaddai
Erkamka na Adonai
I will praise and lift You high
El Shaddai
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Let me introduce you to El Shaddai.
Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.
In this passage the word El Shaddai is used for the very first time. This is the time that Abram is introduced to El Shaddai the Almighty Creator God. It is a very interesting word. It is a compound of two words Elohim the Creator God and Shaddai the Almighty. But that word Shaddai has it’s roots in the word breast or the nursing mother. Someone described El Shaddai as Jeans and Lace mixed together compassion and power. You want to know what I look in all my studies of El Shaddai I believe that El Shaddai as what everyone would ever want in the ideal parent the combination of the attributes of Father and Mother. LET ME BE PERFECTLY CLEAR. I am not trying to make our God mother goddess or mother earth. God is masculine. But He is the perfect parent. He is the mighty masculine character that has a mother touch. God gave men women to be helpers and mothers to meet their lack. God our heavenly father has no short comings. He is the best Father God. He is the compassionate caring almighty Father Creator GOD! That is what El Shaddai is.
To Abram, El Shaddai was multiplied blessings.
Genesis 17:2–4 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.
Abram at this point he was 99 years old. He left his home to follow God 24 years ago and had done so without having a child or seeing the answer to the promises of God. He may have been wondering if God would ever come through on His promises. He needed God to listen to His family He needed God to step in and do a miracle. That is when you reach out to El Shaddai.
To Abram, El Shaddai was a new name.
Genesis 17:5–6 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.
One of my favorite moments in the life of Abraham the man created to be God’s friend is when God gives him a new name and it is during that time that God presents himself as El Shaddai the all powerful God the God who is going to give 99 year old Abraham a child the thing that is impossible to do and it is during that time that the great parent God says Abram I want to be their for you I am going to change your name.
Almighty, El Shaddai does the impossible.
Genesis 18:13–14 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
Can God take care of all your problems? YES He can! Will God hear your requests? Yes He will
Think about this for a second what book of the Old Testament is El Shaddai used the most?
El Shaddai is used 65% of the time in the book of Job.
Job 27:2 As God lives, who has taken away my justice, And the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter,
I want you to think about my premise, El Shaddai is the greatest parent you will ever need. He is the great Father you always wanted and the loving mother that cared for you when you needed it the most. He is the muscle and the nursing breast. He is caring and cuddles and Power and punishment all rolled up into one. There was a lady in our church Shirley Zimmer she used to say to me ABBA DADDY about her relationship with God. I wish I could have shared with her EL SHADDAI
El Shaddai’s New Testament counterpart is used 75% of the time in the book of Revelation.
Revelation 4:8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”
When you think of the POWER of Father God picture the throne that was the first verse I used with you today. When you picture CHERABIM and SERAPHIM falling down before Him think El Shaddai! The Almighty. The world is going to learn about our Father God. Don’t mess with His children Israel during the great tribulation the Almighty God.
El Shaddai is everything you want in a mother.
El Shaddai hears.
Psalm 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles.
El Shaddai meets the needs of your life.
Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Babies won’t make it without a mother character so do all need the Almighty God who cares and nourishes His child like a nursing mother.
El Shaddai slaps the child’s hand.
Hebrews 12:5–7 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?”
El Shaddai is always there when you need Him.
Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
That is the idea of the motherly concern for her child. God spreads out his shade his concern His care and he pulls you in close to His breast just like a nursing mother ready to protect.
El Shaddai is everything you could want in a father.
El Shaddai gets stuff done.
1 Thessalonians 5:24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
Usually if you want to cry on someone’s shoulders you go to mom. If you want to get your toilet fixed you go to Dad. Mom is great when you need care and concern, but Dad gets things done. When we say El Shaddai, he is like mom and wants to hear your problems and HE cares but He is also like Dad and is able to move mountains to get things done. He is El Shaddai.
El Shaddai helps you be a man.
Job 5:17 Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
When you think about the book of Job. God let Job go through a lot. At the beginning of the book Job is under the hedge of protection of God. Just like the Shadow of His wings. The one close to the breast of God. BUT BUT when Satan comes a knocking on the door of the Almighty! God says ok. Give Him problems you watch my little boy become a man. Was El Shaddai with Job every step of the WAY OH Yeah but El Shaddai allowed Job to face it to display His Almighty power through his child.
El Shaddai helps you when you need Him the most.
Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”
I tell you something whenever I get a problem, I still go to my Dad. That is my go to person. There may be people better at the job. But there is nobody that I want to do the job with than my Dad. If I got a problem I am usually going to call my Dad when I need some help.
When you have problems in this life call out to El Shaddai.
James 1:2–5 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
When you face problems. When you get into trouble trials tests. Like Job. Cry out to El Shaddai. He cares wants to hear the problems, and he wants to be there to help you get through him.
Share El Shaddai to the next generation.
Genesis 28:3 May God Almighty bless you, And make you fruitful and multiply you, That you may be an assembly of peoples;
You need to keep sharing El Shaddai with those who come after you. When Isaac passes on the bless to Jacob He does it in the name of El Shaddai. He sends what he learned from his Father Abraham His father who knew El Shaddai personally and Jacob whose name is going to be changed to Israel needed to know what El Shaddai means and how to send it on to the next generatioon.
El Shaddai cares.
Psalm 22:9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts.
Moms know when their child is crying. The LORD is the same way. He is ready to be there when you need Him the most.
El Shaddai can.
Revelation 1:8 ““I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
God can and He will. He put the stars in place. He causes the wind and the rain He owns the cattle on a thousand Hills.
El Shaddai comforts.
Ruth 1:20–21 But she said to them, “Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the Lord has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”
Naomi was at her lowest. She lost her husband. That is hard to lose your husband. I don’t know that from experience but talking with lots of women who have lost their husband let me tell you that what you need is El Shaddai the God that will hear your cry and will comfort you when you need the most powerful enough to help you through the tough days.
God is sensitive to your cry.
Job 13:3 But I would speak to the Almighty, And I desire to reason with God.
When you are having a bad day and you don’t know where to turn turn to El Shaddai. He is sensitive to your needs. He understands He has been their and He can help you through.
God is strong enough to supply the answer.
Genesis 43:14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved, I am bereaved!”
Remember when Isaac was blessing Jacob him who would one day be Israel. This is the moment He needed El Shaddai. He lost one son He was preparing his heart to lose another and in that moment He needed El Shaddai.
When you are like Jacob and you feel like you have lost it all. He thought Joseph was gone and that all his hope was lost. In those moments you call out to the God who does the impossible. His son that was lost was brought back. The Son who had died was not litterally but from Jacob’s perspective he rose from the dead, El Shaddai does the impossible
Benediction: May El Shaddai bless you and keep you.
Genesis 48:3 “Then Jacob said to Joseph: “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,”
May God Almighty bless you and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you.
