Talk about what text in John encapsulate the Lord’s supper, most descriptive of gospels
What happened there.
Humility John 13:5–8 “Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.””
Talk about how in the setting where Jesus shared His last words with His followers, that He started with humility. God can’t use us in areas where pride remains
Where do you struggle with the tension between pride and humility in your life? Don’t get to avoid this question or it shows just how prideful we are? If Jesus humbled himself what pride do you need to confess tonight?
WHO PRAYS HERE FOR HUMILITY
Direction John 15:12–17 ““This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. This I command you, that you love one another.”
Where do you struggle to love? Where does forgiveness need to take place?
WHO PRAYS HERE FOR LOVE AND FORGIVENESS
Trust John 15:18–21 ““If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they followed My word, they will follow yours also. But all these things they will do to you on account of My name, because they do not know the One who sent Me.” John 15:26–27 ““When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”
Have to trust me in the face of hardship and opposition, you have the Holy Spirit to help you.
Gethsemane - Was Jesus’ prayer a struggle with trusting the Father with the plan?
Where do you struggle with trusting God?
Can reference back to feet washing, don’t know now, know later.
WHO PRAYS HERE FOR US TO TRUST
COMMUNION
In a Spirit of humility, confessing our need to grow in love, entering into a time together of saying Lord we trust your Spirit, let’s begin to take communion.
Though John’s account spends more time with Jesus’ words at the Last supper, His gospel is the only one that doesn’t actually record the taking of the elements and so we look at Luke 22.
Luke 22:19 “And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is being given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.””
given/broken for you. As we take this bread let us do so with a spirit of humility, with a renewed love for others, trusting his plan. Let’s take the bread.
Luke 22:20 “And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant in My blood.”
As we take this cup, let’s do so with gratitude for receiving more than what we are worthy of receiving, but also acknowledging that because of His blood we ARE WORTHY to be identified with Him and enter into His blessing. Let’s take the cup.
Let’s leave tonight worshipping together.
