Another Psalm written for stringed instruments. specifically an eight stringed harp
A Psalm of David
Again written to the chief musician
Do you remember who the chief musician could be?
Jehovah Elohim or Heman the singer most likely Asaph
This psalm is known as a song of confession and humility
Traditionally this is a song used on Ash Wednesday 40 days before Resurrection Sunday.
I know people that get int the Ash Wednesday practice. You are a Christian you are free to participate in it or not. Just know that you can’t earn or lose your salvation by doing it. But this verse would be good to read and meditate on 40 days before the resurrection. I believe
Please be careful God.
Psalm 6:1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger, Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure.
Do you notice that David doesn’t say that he doesn’t deserve to be rebuked or chastened. He asks that God not do it in anger or displeasure.
David realized that he deserved punishment.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We need to learn that if anything happens to us we deserve it. The plea is to the mercy of the Almighty God. When you get punished you deserve it.
David is asking for mercy of God.
Remember the Golden Calf.
Exodus 32:9–10 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.”
The golden calf reminds us that God could wipe us out just like that! In His righteous anger, we could be consumed. But through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed.
Rebuke - to correct make right.
Hebrews 12:5–6 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”
When God punishes you, He does it with a purpose. To get you back on the right path.
Chasten - to punish with blows
Hebrews 12:7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
God chastens His children, we need it. We just are like a kid getting ready to get a spanking. David is saying ok God I am getting the spanking just do it when your face isn’t hot in being displeased with me. My wife and I really work on this. Kids get spanked but it doesn’t happen in the heat of the moment.
Mercy, God please, Mercy!
Psalm 6:2–3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled; But You, O Lord—how long?
Mercy - God with holding what we deserve.
Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
I am weak.
Romans 5:6–8 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
We were weak couldn’t help ourselves because of our sin. That is when Christ died for us. You want to know the sad part of Psalm 6 is that David was on the wrong side of the cross. He didn’t have Romans 5 to cling to Jesus who died on the cross for us. That is why this verse has such despair that side of the cross and why this would be appropriate for Ash Wednesday
Heal me!
Malachi 4:2 But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves.”
Before the cross men like David and Malachi begged for the Messiah who came with healing in His wings
Tell John, Jesus is the healing Messiah!
Luke 7:22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.”
That is why Jesus sent the message to John the Baptist Jesus the Messiah would come with healing in His wings
My soul is greatly troubled.
Matthew 26:38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”
I have already made the case that this is something that can be used for thoughts prior to the cross.
How long?
Habakkuk 1:2 O Lord, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You, “Violence!” And You will not save.
This is also the cry before the second coming.
Revelation 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”
From human perspective the LORD is taking His time. Our days our short while we deal in years God deals in millenia so He has side on His way He comes exactly when he neeeds to the Jews were asksing the question after 400 years being in Egypt we are still asking the question about the second coming.
David’s urgent plea for mercy.
Psalm 6:4–5 Return, O Lord, deliver me! Oh, save me for Your mercies’ sake! For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks?
Deliver me for mercy sake.
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
The imagery here has to be the mercy seat. The day of atonement when the priest went behind the veil. Jesus dying on the cross is the ultimate mercy seat.
God saved us for His sake.
Isaiah 48:9–11 For My name’s sake I will defer My anger, And for My praise I will restrain it from you, So that I do not cut you off. Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it; For how should My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another.
God saving us is more about Him than it is about you. You have to get your mind working around it. Some people think they are too bad and can’t be saved, WRONG! The worse you are the more glory He gets and the more His mercy is used. BUT That is not an excuse to sin. Paul deals with that. Because this is about Him also it means that you can never be too good to earn or not need God’s salvation. That is why it is important that there is none rightoeous.
In death there is no remembrance of You.
Ephesians 2:1–2 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
You need to remember that in the Old Testament that people’s thoughts on the after life were rather fuzzy. In other words it wasn’t as solid as today. That doesn’t mean that the Old Testament or this verse teaches that there was no afterlife just passages like this that opened the door for the Saduccees.
The resurrection changes our thoughts on the resurrection.
2 Timothy 1:10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
“Churchyards are silent places; the vaults of the sepulcher echo not with songs. Damp earth covers silent mouths.” (Spurgeon)
Mercy brings life.
Ephesians 2:4–5 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
You can have confidence in life.
Job 19:25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth;
There are enough verses that give you confidence in the resurrection that you can see Psalm 6.4-5 for what they are. You have to make your decision today because death is coming it also lets us see what Jesus endured for us on those 3 days.
I grow tired of crying so much.
Psalm 6:6–7 I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears. My eye wastes away because of grief; It grows old because of all my enemies.
David is very sad about his sin. David filled his pillow with tears. His eyes waste away because of what he endures. I will tell you what, we think that because we are strong people we can’t cry. David realised he was a sinner and mourned over his sin. Man this passage is appropriage before the cross.
God records your tears.
Psalm 56:8 You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?
I like this better than he knows every hair of your head (impressive) which everyone remembers but I like the personal touch of remembering the tears in your bottle.
Jesus wept.
John 11:35 Jesus wept.
Jesus cried about Jerusalem.
Matthew 23:37–39 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
I believe that every bomb dropped on Jerusalem gets Jesus in tears. God collects and records all the tears of mankind. He keeps them all and He is able to do more than you will ever know.
Bring your tears to God.
2 Kings 20:5 Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord.
Weeping comes at night, joy is in the morning.
Psalm 30:5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.
Psalm 126:5 Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy.
We should be in tears with the weight of sin.
Lamentations 2:18 Their heart cried out to the Lord, “O wall of the daughter of Zion, Let tears run down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief; Give your eyes no rest.
Jeremiah prayed to God about the fall of Jerusalem, because the people were in sin. I tell you what I have had some people tell me. Pastor America needs revival we are in trouble. Is that true? YEP But no one has ever come to me in tears about the sin of this country. They are always judgmental rather than broken. America better get it’s act together. Not America why can’t we get our act together.
Our enemies better watch out, God is for us.
Psalm 6:8–10 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity; For the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord has heard my supplication; The Lord will receive my prayer. Let all my enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled; Let them turn back and be ashamed suddenly.
God causes your enemies to flee.
2 Kings 7:5–6 And they rose at twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians; and when they had come to the outskirts of the Syrian camp, to their surprise no one was there. For the Lord had caused the army of the Syrians to hear the noise of chariots and the noise of horses—the noise of a great army; so they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us!”
This story is when 4 Lepers went out to the Syrian camp that had been deserted. When the king of Samaria was very mad at Elisha for the terrible things happening. The enemies of God always blame him when things don’t go there way and donkey head and dove droppings were being sold for food and women may agreement to eat each other’s babies. These people were desperate. And God ended it one night. You shall see it with your eyes but you shall not eat it to the King’s grimer worm tongue
David had confidence in answered prayer.
The LORD has heard my weeping.
Exodus 3:7–8 And the Lord said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.
God saving Israel from Egypt is a great picture of God saving, delivering, you from your enemies. Who are your enemies and what does God save you from and save you to.
How does this story mirror the gospel
The Lord will receive my prayer.
John 14:13–14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
do you have FAITH that God will answer your prayer. There is something about faith. It is substance. Rob Gould and I talked for awhile recently he sent me something that said that faith is something that is suggested and taught to children conditioned into them. We should teach children faith but the truth is a lot of children run from faith besides your best efforts . God is in the business of redeeming dramatically the lost. But training your children in the LORD is still the best method. FAITH IS SUBSTANCE! FAITH IS in what..…
Your enemies should be ashamed.
Romans 8:38–39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The day of Judgment is coming
Jude 14–15 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
The Devil is our biggest enemy, and he should be scared.
Revelation 20:7–10 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Not scared of us, but scared of MY JESUS who is the beast slayer.
