Purpose: Birth of Christ
Characters: Mary, Joseph, Angel of the Lord, Jesus
Actions: Mary was pregnant before they got “together.”
Betrothed:
Act of engagement for marriage in Bible times and was as binding as marriage.
New Testament Mary and Joseph were betrothed but did not live together until their wedding.
Not to be entirely equated with the modern concept of engagement, betrothal followed the selection of the bride by the prospective husband. The contract was negotiated by a friend or agent representing the bridegroom and by the parents representing the bride. It was confirmed by oaths and was accompanied with presents to the bride and often to the bride’s parents.
From the Holy Spirit
Joseph wanted divorce her, but wanted to do it quietly
why? —> Adultery
Angel appears and reassures
Son will be born who will “save his people from their sins”
Fulfillment- Is 7:14
