Welcome to Vertical Church
Acts 2:42 (LSB)
And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
As a church we seek to uphold the values of the NT church as seen in Acts 2:42 -
We are Trinitarian - while God is one in essence, He is three in person: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit
We believe in the sovereignty of God - sovereign over all creation, sovereign over the affairs of men, sovereign over salvation
We believe that the Church is not a building or a denomination but a people - those who are truly in Christ and embrace the truths that were embraced and confessed by the New Testament Church, the apostolic church. molly
We believe in the authority of the Bible - Scripture alone is the Word of God, We are a bible teaching church
We are evangelical - we believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
We are a Vertical Church - we believe that all true worship and living is Vertical, God directed and for the glory of God alone.
Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone, For the glory of God alone - join us on Sundays
The church at Pentecost, before persecution, before division, before deception
Let us worship God
Call to Worship
What is your only comfort in life and in death?
That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and redeemed me from all the power of the devil;
and so preserves me, that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that all things must work together for my salvation.
Wherefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready henceforth to live unto Him.

How many things are necessary for you to know to live and die in the joy of this comfort?
Three things: first, the greatness of my sin and misery; second, how I am redeemed from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to be thankful to God for such redemption.

Scripture Reading - Romans 1:18-23
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the likeness of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Introduction: Exodus 6 - You Shall See What I Will Do
The God who is not hidden
Seek me and you shall find me - Jer 29:13
Taste and see that the Lord is good - Ps 34:8
The heavens declare the glory of God - Ps 19
Romans 1:19 - God has made it evident to them
But Rom 1:18 reminds us that we suppress truth, we intentionally push it down, push against it, force it out of the lght and back into the darkness
In the Book of Exodus, pharaoh has forgotten what the Lord did.
It says they forgot Joseph but they intentionally forgot the Lord
And then, in their unrighteousness, they try to destroy the people of God.
And the Lord sends a deliverer, and while he was to live by faith, he chose to live by sight and to murder an Egyptian and then to flee
But the Lord calls him, and saves him, and gives him a calling.
And in Exodus 5 Moses likes the part that includes being the savior of Israel, the deliverer of Israel, but he leaves out the part of his calling that includes suffering and hardship
And that is dangerous territory for any believer who wants a crown without a cross, a reward without rejection, salvation without suffering, receiving truth without learning to trust
And so, at the end of Exodus 5 Moses questions his call, the people are unhappy, and pharaoh thinks that He has all of the power
This reminds me of several times in my life when I thought I was cruising, or I thought that I was treated unfairly, or I actually encountered carnal Christians who seemed to get way with whatever they wanted.
So what does the Lord do in Exodus 6? He does what Jesus did so often in his teaching. He does what the apostles encouraged us to do.
Come, fix your eyes on the one who is faithful, look to the one who truly is in control, surrender to His sovereignty and perfect will
(1) Now you shall see
1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for by a strong hand he will let them go, and by a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”
(2) Now you should remember
2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am Yahweh; 3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, Yahweh, I was not known to them. 4 “And I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned.
I am Yahweh - 4 times
(3) Now you should pray
5 “Furthermore I have heard the groaning of the sons of Israel because the Egyptians are holding them in slavery, and I have remembered My covenant.
(4) Now you should share
6 “Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the hard labors of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their slavery. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.
(5) Now you should cling to the promises
7 ‘Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the hard labors of the Egyptians. 8 ‘And I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am Yahweh.’”
I am Yahweh - what does this mean?
The seven I wills
(6) Now you should obey
9 So Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on account of their weakness of spirit and hard slavery.
(7) Now you need to persevere
10 Now Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 11 “Come, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the sons of Israel go out of his land.” 12 But Moses spoke before Yahweh, saying, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am of uncircumcised lips?” 13 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron and gave them a command for the sons of Israel and for Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
Who are Moses and Aaron? - the genealogy right before the action begins - this is a God thing - the Lord has preserved and worked and brought them to this point
14 These are the heads of their fathers’ households. The sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben. 15 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon. 16 These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon and Kohath and Merari; and the years of Levi’s life were 137 years. 17 The sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, according to their families. 18 The sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uzziel; and the years of Kohath’s life were 133 years. 19 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations. 20 And Amram took his father’s sister Jochebed as a wife, and she bore him Aaron and Moses; and the years of Amram’s life were 137 years. 21 The sons of Izhar: Korah and Nepheg and Zichri. 22 The sons of Uzziel: Mishael and Elzaphan and Sithri. 23 And Aaron took Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, as a wife, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 24 The sons of Korah: Assir and Elkanah and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites. 25 And Aaron’s son Eleazar took one of the daughters of Putiel as a wife, and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites according to their families. 26 It was the same Aaron and Moses to whom Yahweh said, “Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their hosts.” 27 They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring out the sons of Israel from Egypt; it was the same Moses and Aaron.
28 Now it happened on the day when Yahweh spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 that Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “I am Yahweh; speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I am speaking to you.” 30 But Moses said before Yahweh, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips; how then will Pharaoh listen to me?”
Our reluctance can only be overcome through recognition of our sinfulness and repentance. Each day we need turn back to the Lord in humility
Now may the God who never abandons you and never lets go of you, go before you in your darkness, stand beside you in your fears, make you faithful in your temptations until Jesus comes. Amen.
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was being betrayed took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.
