Big Idea
Big Idea
This is a mission that defines our purpose
Can you think of a scripture that backs that up?
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Can you think of another?
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
OK, that get’s us started
Authority for Mission
Authority for Mission
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
How do you know Jesus has the authority for the mission?
The authority of the mission comes from Jesus and is commanded to the apostles and passed to his followers. It was local, it is global, it is cross cultural, and has no geographical boundaries.
Every believer is called to participate in it.
OK, participation time, what does authority for mission look like, can you describe it. I will get us started but I want your input too.
We go out boldly under Christ’s command and Christ’s authority
Share the gospel with love and truth
Teaching about obedience to Jesus’ words
Be living examples of faithful discipleship
Walk in the Spirit, rely in the Spirit rather than our own strength
Serve others in humility and not lord over others or get puffed up with pride.
Gee that sounds like making disciples doesn’t it, so maybe we can hold some of that over for under scope of the mission or process of the mission.
Scope of the Mission
Scope of the Mission
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Let’s break this down the verse then get into the scope of the mission
Go - - - - the action, as you are going, do something
make disciples, followers
of all nations, peoples
baptizing them, the peoples
in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit
So, it is a command to go, to go and make followers, disciples, crossing cultural and geographical boundaries.
Every believer is called to participate, whether locally or globally.
It is important we get the gospel out, it is where the power of God is
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
So, participation time, how can we all be involved in the scope of the mission?
If the scope is to make disciples of all nations, how can everyone be involved?
Maybe make the whole world our world where we live, Calandar, Fort Dodge, Manson, Humboldt. Maybe it is willing to do a correspondence course through world bible school with someone.
The Process of Mission
The Process of Mission
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Disciples are made how according to these verses?
Through baptizing and teaching them to obey (observe) all the Lord had commanded.
It is more than just up to conversion but a life time of nurturing and growing. Learning to be faithful unto death (Rev2:10).
Jesus promises His presence with them always, even until the end of the age!
How can we nurture disciple making?
Be a disciple who is willing to make a disciple. Take a journey together
Do you think that Jesus meant all were to be a part of the great commission?
Do you think we can work together as a body of believers to embrace this and grow in this area?
Application Points
Application Points
Personal Reflection: Stop, think of one person you can begin disciplining, pray, ask God to show you who.
Practical step: Start a weekly coffee or bible study with that person to share you faith journey.
Community challenge: Join or start a small group focused on disciple making accountability, which is what our Sunday Night is about right now.
