Can things be both good and bad?
Can the noun “pride” be a good thing and a bad thing?
This morning I want us to begin by defining this word before we read the scripture associated with its connotation.
Pride Defined:

a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction that you get because you or people connected with you have done or got something good:
your feelings of your own worth and respect for yourself:
the belief that you are better or more important than other people:
“inordinate and unreasonable self -esteem, attended with insolence and rude treatment of others”

16 The horror you inspire has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who live in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will bring you down from there, declares the Lord.
God used the prophet Jeremiah to warn Edom that they might feel themselves outside of the reach of men, but God could do what He wanted with them. “I will bring you down from there, declares the Lord.”

13 You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’
This is Satan. He thought much of himself, but was cast down because of his placing himself in too high a place.
Meaning He thought too much of himself.

13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Ways Pride Hinders Man/Woman:

Pride takes us back to original sin. (Gen. 3:1)
Pride is equated with evil. (Prov. 8:13)
Pride opposes submission. (James 4:6-7)
Pride cares more about man than God. (Prov. 29:25)
Pride values self—humility values God.

Surrender to the Lord.
Walk in His Way.
