Now David has been made king
David is the second King in all of Israel and the only one that I can think of to be promised to always have someone seated on the throne
Read through Matthew 1 and see for yourself that Jesus is of the linage of David
Thus making God a promise keeper
But back to David
David was an amazing King
Of everything that King David and years after his death
Acts 13:22 NASB95
22 “After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.’
David is said to have a heart after God
It does not say that David was perfect in fact we have many many chapters and verses that say otherwise
But as you read the whole story of David and I would challenge you to
See as you read through there that even in the midst of Sin
You see a repentant heart and trust and faith in God that not many other kings have
I am currently reading through the many different kings of Israel and Judah
They say one of 2 things
He did evil in the sight of the Lord like his father XX
Or he was right in the sight of the Lord but still unlike his father David
David was an amazing King who trusted the Lord and lead his people to trust the Lord
When you think of King David you think of the warrior king and fleeing for his life from King Saul
Maybe you think of David being knit Jonathan’s heart
You probably also think of David and Bathsheba
David also had some sons and one of them tried to take over
Absolum fleed for his life after essentially stealing the throne from David and his hair got caught in the tree
By the way that is another one of my favorite Bible Stories
So how do you reconcile with David and Bathseba and now in the New Testament King david is considered a man after my own heart
How in the world does that go
It was written in 1 Samuel 13 while Saul was still King but if David was such a horrible king then why would it be repeated
Because David’s was after God
David messed up and sinned but as you will see its what he did in response to that sin
David was so concerned with the heart and word of God
1 Samuel 24:1–7 NASB95
1 Now when Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. 3 He came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave. 4 The men of David said to him, “Behold, this is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold; I am about to give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good to you.’ ” Then David arose and cut off the edge of Saul’s robe secretly. 5 It came about afterward that David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe. 6 So he said to his men, “Far be it from me because of the Lord that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.” 7 David persuaded his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. And Saul arose, left the cave, and went on his way.
David still believed rightly so that Saul was the Lords Anointed
And David did not want to be against God in taking out the man whom the Lord has indeed anointed as King over the people
Even though Samuel had anointed him as the next king but Saul wasn’t gone yet
David had such a respect and honor for the Lord and whever the Lord had anointed as the leader of the chosen people
What strength it took to not lashout and take care of business because his own men were justifying him and I believe the world would have justified him
However what great reverence he had for the Lord
Church that is because David had spent so much time with God
Just like you and I can be spending time with God
You hear that about David and you are like yea I like that and wow he is an awesome Man!!
Then the infamous
When Kings go out to war
1 Chronicles 20:1 NASB95
1 Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that Joab led out the army and ravaged the land of the sons of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. And Joab struck Rabbah and overthrew it.
When it was war time and kings do what kings do which is to lead your armies out to battle
Joab who was a leader in David’s army lead the army out instead
Then it says But
See the story is going when Kings go out to war that David should have gone out to war
But it changes drastically
David didn’t do the thing he should have been doing
Praise the Lord you and I don’t have chapters of our mistakes and sins for people to read about and pull apart
David was where he shouldn’t have been
That is clue number one
This is the beginning of David walking right off the cliff
USE THE ROPE DEMONSTRATION
This is exactly what satan does to us
We get to a point thinking things are great because we aren’t crossing the line
Nothing wrong with Kings staying home but you could see where that leads to problems
Problems usually start when you are not where you are supposed to be, at a time you are not to be there doing what you should not be doing
See how just this small simple verse starts to lead David down a place he shouldn’t be
I say all that to say don’t play the game of getting so close to the line and not crossing it
Rather we should stay as far away from the line as we can
So David stayed home when normally he would be out leading his army to battle
David stayed home
This opens the door and gives satan an opportunity and foot hold if you will
We know what happens because David stays home and church it is a reminder to ensure you are where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there
Church it is a reminder to all of us to ensure we are walking after the Lord
We know what happens David see Bathsheba and thinks she is beautiful and sends someone to bring her to him and he lies wit her and she becomes preganat
Then David starts to panic because now he has to cover up what he has done
This happens in our own lives after we sin
We start to panic and try to conceal what we have done
First David tries to have Uriah Bathsheba’s Husband go and lie with her
But Uriah won’t because his men are still fighting on the front line
Then David comes up with the plan to have him killed and Uriah is killed in battle at the word and direction of David
Now with all that information how do we marry knowing all that with David being a man after Gods heart
Everyone in here has sinned
No one sin is greater because all of sin is punishible by death
It is what David did after he is confronted with sin in his life
It is what you and I do when we are confronted with sin
We have talked about Paul’s and Timothy’s
We now get to talk about nathans
2 Samuel 12:1–6 NASB95
1 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said, “There were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 “The rich man had a great many flocks and herds. 3 “But the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb Which he bought and nourished; And it grew up together with him and his children. It would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom, And was like a daughter to him. 4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, And he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd, To prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him; Rather he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die. 6 “He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion.”
Nathan is the prophet of the Lord and is called to go and speak to the King
Nathan goes and shares with David a story
David’s angery starts to burn just hearing about that we start to get upset
David even comes to the same conclusion we probably would hearing that story
This rich guy needs to at least pay for what he has done
The rich guy David thinks need to die
At this point David still hasn’t been confronted with his own sin
And then Nathan does
2 Samuel 12:7–9 NASB95
7 Nathan then said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘It is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 ‘I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these! 9 ‘Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
You are the rich man in the story I was just sharing about
Nathan says that you had it all and if that was to little I would have given you more and yet you go and kill Uriah
Let me clear
You and I as believers in Jesus Christ need friends like Nathan in our lives
Need friends who will confront us with our own sin
And what makes David and man after God’s own heart is his response to being confronted with his own sin
David repents
2 Samuel 12:13 NASB95
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die.
This is what makes David a man after Gods own heart
The fact that when confronted with sin
David’s response is repentance
What is your response when confronted with sin
Do you run and hide
Do we stick our heads in the sand and pretend like nothing happened
Do we try and conceal it and deny it happened
Or church do we seek the Lord and repent from our own sin
that is to seek the heart of the Lord and to have the heart of the Lord
This is what sets David apart from the other kings
To repent is not to just say yep I messed up and I am sorry
Rather to repent is to admit or agree with the Lord that what you did was wrong
Then seek forgiveness
Then flee from it and set up things so that it doesn’t happen again
A reorientation back towards God
Maybe you got off track and you need to readjust the mirrors and get the car back on the road
Maybe you know I have horrible days if I don’t spend time with Jesus in the morning
Part of repentance is going the extra mile to ensure you spend time with Jesus in the mornings
Charles Spurgeon - “It is always a sign of repentance in Christians who have fallen when they leave the company where they were led astray”
Repentance requires action
Psalm 51:10–14 NASB95
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
This is what Repentance looks like a call and cry to change
Simply asking forgiveness is not repentence
That is the act of changing
To learn from what we have done
To seek the Lord
David after being confronted with his own sin cries out to the Lord
Psalms 51 is a cry for forgiveness and a cry for the Lord to change his heart
A call to repentance
This is what it is to have the heart of God
Church we are lucky we don’t have chapters written about our sin for otehrs to talk about
But like David we have to decide how we will respond to being confronted with our own sin
So this morning as we come to a close
The invitation is to do business with the Lord
maybe you are here this morning and do not have a relationship with Jesus
Maybe you have questions or want to begin a personal relationship with Jesus this morning
Would you come and speak with some people at front
Or maybe you want to make another decision
Maybe you had a personal relaitonship with Jesus and have walked away
Maybe this morning you need to repent and return to the Lord
Or maybe it is joining the church
Or maybe you just want to spend sometime in prayer at the alter
The alter is open
