Connection

New series about the life of David.
Grace and Grit
Grace: Undeserving, unmerited favor.
Grit: The will and faith to press on.
David is noted as a man after God’s own heart, and he is a deeply flawed man. David is someone we should all read about and follow because his story is so similar to our own at times.
Recap Saul's situation. Samuel goes searching for a new king. God has decided on someone else.

Word

1 Samuel 16:1 NIV
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel?
Pause — if the Lord is telling you to let it go...let it go. Sammy is focused on Saul and sad that saul turned out exactly how the Lord said he would.
1 Samuel 16:1 NIV
Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.
Notice this...
Saul was chosen by the people, David was chosen by the Lord.
1 Samuel 16:2–4 NIV
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” 4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”
Samuel was the judge of Israel, Bethlehem was an obscure town, people didn’t go there often and the judge certainly didn’t come that often so their immediate thought was - we’re in trouble.
1 Samuel 16:5–6 NIV
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
Big tall strong man — imagine tim tebow, that’s who’s standing there and the Lord says...
1 Samuel 16:7–11 NIV
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”
There has got to be someone else.
It’s almost like he forgot about David. Oh yeah, the youngest, he’s out in the field playing the harp and messing with this sling thing he has.
1 Samuel 16:11 NIV
11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
Now we all stand. IDK why they’re standing, it’s like he punished them. Good. None of you are worthy to be king, now we all stand.
1 Samuel 16:12–13 NIV
12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
David goes back into the field. Working, b/c he wasn’t ready for his calling.

Application

I want to draw your attention to verse 7.
1 Samuel 16:7 NIV
7 ...The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
David was anointed not b/c of his stature, Saul was. Not b/c of his leadership capacity, he was about 12-13. Not for his riveting communication style nor his business acumen.
David was anointed b/c of his heart.
No other reason. So consequently that means we should focus on the inside first.
Do you know what David was doing in the fields?
Praise and worship
Why is this important?
Worship properly positions your heart.
It’s a reminder that Lord you are up there and I am down here. You are all powerful . I am here b/c of your grace and mercy, and the blood of Jesus.
B/c when you worship you being shaped by and encounter with the Lord and that is how you prepare yourself for when he taps you on the shoulder and say’s “alright scooter, your turn.”

Inspiration

Let’s become a people who worship first. We don’t need a reason, we just need breath in our lungs.
Here’s the other thing, it blesses God.
Bless, bles, v.t. to invoke a blessing upon: to make joyous, happy, or prosperous: to wish happiness to: to praise or glorify.
Final Song is Bless God.
Invitation.
