Jesus turns to answer the question of the destruction of the Temple and His return.
As we will see, the events detailed here were foreshadowed in the destruction of Jerusalem, but they have a greater future fulfillment.
The Abomination of Desolation
The Abomination of Desolation
The beginning of sorrows will occur during the first half of the tribulation.
Jesus promised us that in this world we will have tribulation, but we overcome through Him.
33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
During the middle of the 7 year time of the anti-Christ’s reign, he will break the covenant and set up the Abomination of Desolation.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.”
31 And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation.
11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days.
This has not yet occurred.
Paul said the man of destruction would set himself up in the temple of God to be worshiped. 2 Thessalonians 2:1–4 “1 Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, 2 that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.”
The Great Tribulation
The Great Tribulation
Then the world will enter the time of the Great Tribulation - really the last 3-1/2 years of what we call the Tribulation.
It will be a time of severe trouble, especially for the nation of Israel. Jeremiah called it the “time of Jacob’s trouble” Jeremiah 30:7
It will be a time of strong delusion. 2 Thess 2:8-14
8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Sign of Christ’s Return
The Sign of Christ’s Return
We will touch more on this next week. But I want you to know that God’s word gives us great comfort in the midst of perilous time!
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but God’s Word will always comfort me.” - Michael Thrift
Christ will return in glory and it will be evident to all. verse 30.
The nation of Israel will turn to their Messiah!
29 But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice.
How can you and I prepare for the trouble to come? Be ready for His imminent return! verse 44
Have you trusted Christ as Savior.
Be Watchful, Be Faithful, Be Merciful - Be Ready
