Introduction

The setting (Daniel 1:1)

IN the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

The kingdom of Israel was getting worse and worse from the politicians to the religious leaders.
Because of this, God used the Babylonian empire to judge them.
The king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, told his men when they came to Israel, to take some of the good young men back to Babylon with them so they could work for the king.
The characters (Daniel 1:3,6,7)

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;

Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.

The story (separation from everything they knew)

With How They Lived

When Daniel and his friends got to Babylon, they were separated from their culture, religion, and family.
They were forced to decide for themselves how they were going to live: what they would eat, who they would become friends with, what kind of music they would learn and listen to, and who they would obey.
They did not have the outside influence to push them in a certain direction. In fact, they were being pushed in a totally wrong direction. (Daniel 1:8)

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank:

But Daniel and his friends depended on God and His word to show them how to live even in a brand new setting and circumstances. (Daniel 1:12-13)(15)

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.

With How They Dealt With Questions

The king had a very disturbing dream that he thought seemed very important but could not figure out what it meant. (Daniel 2:1)

And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.

The king ordered his wise men to interpret it, but they could not. (Daniel 2:2)

Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams.

Right when the king was going to kill all the wise men, Daniel asked for a little more time and went to his friends to pray to God. (Daniel 2:16,17)

Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.

Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: 18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

They depended on God to give Daniel the answer to the meaning of the king’s dream, and He did. (Daniel 2:19)

Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

When the smartest people in the world couldn’t find the answer to the question, Daniel and his friends could depend on God to give them the answer.

With How They Dealt With Problems

Nebuchadnezzar made a statute of gold and commanded everyone to bow down and worship it or else they would get thrown into a fiery furnace. (Daniel 3: 1)

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

The three friends knew that there is only one God, and He was the only one they should worship.
So when the time came to bow, they stayed standing, and some people told the king.
Even when they came before the king and he asked them to their faces if they would bow, they said they would not.
Then the king threw them into the fiery furnace to die.
But they depended on God and He came down with them into the fire and made the fire to not hurt them. (Daniel 3:24-25)

Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellers, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

When the king saw that there was a fourth man in the fire with them, he told his men to get them out of the furnace.
Then Nebuchadnezzar realized that the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, is the one true God.

Conclusion

If you don’t know what I am talking about, If you don’t know God and He is not in your heart, you can know Him today. If you believe that Jesus died for you and your sin, and rose from the grave and went to live in Heaven with God the Father so that you can, then He will come into your heart and be with you forever.
So if you already have accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, then we know that in every situation we face in every part of our lives, whether you’re five years old or you’re 105 years old, you can depend on God.
If you don’t know what to do in a situation, you can depend on God to show you through His word and through Godly people, what you should do.
Prov 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.
If you have questions about things in life, no matter what it is, you can depend on God to give you the answers.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Or if you have problems that you think are impossible to get through, you can depend on God to be with you right by your side with you in the problems to carry you through to the other side.
Isa 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: Be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; Yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
