Through the life of hte the prophet in prosperity, challenging marriage, and controversial children I want you to illustrate who I am to my People.
Broken Mirror
“I am not as good as God uses me” Dr. Loritts
Outline:
C: “” (vs. 1-13)
C: “” (vs. 14-23)
C: “” (vs.)
Summary of the Chapter: The brokeness of sin deceives us into moving towards something else and forgetting what God has done

Prayer:
A Plea for Repentance: “” (vs. 1-13)
A Plea for Repentance: “” (vs. 1-13)
Hope (v. 1)
Say to your brothers
“You are my people”
Say to your sisters
“You have received mercy”
A continually broken covenant (vs. 2-7)
Plead with you mother- Personal consequences
for she is not my wife
and I am not her husband
that she put away her whoring from her face
and her adultery from between her breasts- this is the problem, this is the sin, it is very specific. And where is it located? What is between the breasts on the chest- the heart
Lest I strip her naked
and make her as in the days she was born
and make her like a wilderness
and make her like a parched land
and kill her with thirst
Now, these personal consequences did not happen right away. It was not like after the first altar to Baal was erected that this happened. It was not after Gomer’s first adulterous relationship that this happened. That is the deceptive nature of sin.
Upon her children also I will have no mercy- Parenting consequences
because they are children of whoredom
for their mother has played the whore-
she who conceived them has acted shamefully- her sin has splashed against them.
for she said,
I will go after my lovers
who give me
my bread and my water
my wool and my flax
my oil and my drink- the necessities of life. She is looking for another provider, another power to sustain her life and she is willing to give what God gave her in return to pay for it.
Therefore: in light of the plea to repent, in light of the consequences, in light of the affect of ongoing sin on those around her…
I will hedge up her way with thorns
and I will build a wall against her
so that she cannot find her paths- the most horrifying corn maze you will ever encounter
She shall pursue her lovers
But not overtake them
and she shall seek them
but shall not find them
then she shall say
I will go and return to my first husband
for it was better for me then than now- not only is this a great grammar lesson on the proper uses of the word “then, than”, but also a revelation in relationship
True source (vs. 8-13)
and she did not know
that it was I who gave her- perfect
the grain
the wine
and the oil
and who lavished on her silver and gold- perfect
which they used for Baal
Therefore
I will take back- perfect
my grain in its time
and my wine in its season
and I will take away my wool and my flax- perfect
which were to cover her nakedness- “without cloths”
Now I will uncover her lewdness- imperfect, ongoing, “shame”
in the sight of her lovers
and no one shall rescue her out of my hand- imperfect, there will continually be no one to rescue her.
And I will put an end to all- perfect
her mirth
her feasts
her new moons
her Sabbaths
and all her appointed feasts
ALL celebrations of faithfulness stop!
I will lay waste- perfect
her vines
and her fig trees
of which she said
these are my wages
which my lovers have given to me
I will make them a forest- perfect
and the beasts of the field shall devour them
And I will punish her- perfect, impose a penalty on
for the feast days of the Baals
when she burned offerings to them- imperfect
and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry- imperfect
and went after her lovers- imperfect
and forgot me, declares the LORD- perfect

Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
How does this effect you as you live with something that is unrepentant in sin
Think about how this effected the children of Israel as they continued in unrepentant sin after years of pleading
Enlist the Body (faith steps):
Transitional phrase:
A Place for the Repentant: “” (vs. 14-23)
A Place for the Repentant: “” (vs. 14-23)
G (vs. 14-15)
Therefore, behold,
I will allure her- “be simple, be inexpert, be gullible, persuasion”
and bring her into the wilderness
and speak tenderly to her- from the heart
and there I will give her her vineyards- in the “wilderness”
and make the Valley of Achor a door of hope- “Achor”, trouble from Joshua 7:26 after the stoning of Achan for taking some of the devoted things for himself and lying about it. This was right after Jericho! This is the corridor into the promised land!!! “Why did you bring trouble on us?”- they broke faith with God.
and there she shall answer as in the days of her youth
as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt
M (vs.)
and in that day
declares the LORD
you will call me, “My Husband”
and no longer will you call me, “My Baal”
For I will
remove the names of the Baals from her mouth
and they shall be remembered by name no more
And I will
make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground
And I will
abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land
and I will
make you lie down in safety
and I will
betroth you to me forever
and I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy
I will
betroth you to me in faithfulness
and you shall know the LORD
G (vs.)
And in that day
I will answer, declares the LORD
I will answer the heavens
and they shall answer the earth
and the earth shall answer
the grain, the wine, and the oil
and they shall answer Jezreel
And I will sow her for myself in the land
and I will have mercy on No Mercy
and I will say to Not My People, “You are my people’
and he shall say, “You are my God’”
