Christmas Eve Reflection: (10-12 minutes)
Go back in time with me… 2 minutes before Jesus was born.
Have you ever wondered what was going through God’s heart and mind?
Tonight, we probably have some fantastic gifts all wrapped up for our kids and family tomorrow. The older I get; I have realized I get more excited about giving a gift to someone I love than receiving a gift. Like when you give your son his first Red Ryder BB Gun, or bow and arrow set, or a trampoline. Or, giving your daughter her first Barbie doll, or bicycle, or iPhone. There’s just so much excitement in you, and anticipation to see their face light up when they unwrap that gift… It brings a smile to your face, doesn’t it?
Have you ever wondered what was going through God’s mind the night his Son, Jesus was born?
The most anticipated gift, the greatest gift he could give humanity was about to be given.
I wonder how God felt when Mary and Joseph realized who this child really was?
I wonder how God felt when the Shepherds got the message and come running to see him?
I wonder how God feels when we finally get it?
I can imagine he feels like you and I do when one of our children or loved ones are about to open up a gift we thoughtfully prepared for them.
Jesus said, “There is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:7). Because we are one of many people who have been saved, we could wonder if our salvation is meaningful to God. But there is joy in heaven, not just over hundreds or thousands of people's salvation, but over one sinner who repents.
God was so filled with excitement and anticipation and JOY… that the world was about to see the GREAT LIGHT!
Scripture:
Isaiah (the OT prophet) wrote 700 years before Jesus came onto the scene and said this: (Isaiah 9:2 and 6)
(2) The people walking in darkness     have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness     a light has dawned… (6) For to us a child is born,     to us a son is given,     and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called     Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
One time when Jesus was talking to his disciples he made the statement, “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12
Invitation:
Jesus came to light up the world and light up your world. The light wasn’t meant to be viewed as a dim glimmer from a distance—it was meant to be near to you. So close you can feel the warmth, use it to guide your path, and see others around you through the light of Christ.
