𧹠INTRO: THE TENSION WE ALL FEEL
Have you ever felt like you didnât quite fit in? Maybe with family, school, or even church?
Thatâs exactly the kind of tension Paul walks into here. The early church was learning how to live out the gospel when people came from very different backgroundsâJewish and Gentile, religious and non-religious.
What do you do when following Jesus causes confusionâor even conflict?
In Acts 21:20â25, we see Paul model humility, wisdom, and gospel courage in a way that builds bridges instead of burning them.
âđ˝ Point 1: People Will Misunderstand You (vv. 20â21)
âđ˝ Point 1: People Will Misunderstand You (vv. 20â21)
âThey have been informed about youâŚâ (v. 21)
Paul was misunderstood. Rumors were spreading that he told Jewish people to ditch their heritage and the Law.
Sometimes people assume the worst about you because of what they heard, not whatâs true.
For seekers and new believers: Following Jesus may cause tension with family or friends who donât get what you're doing. Thatâs normalâand even Paul experienced it.
đ Application: You donât have to panic when misunderstood. You can respond with grace and truth, like Jesus did.
đŹ Gospel Connection: Jesus Himself was misunderstood, falsely accused, and even crucifiedâyet He didnât lash out. He trusted the Father and stayed the course.
đ¤ Point 2: The Gospel Builds Bridges, Not Barriers (vv. 22â24)
đ¤ Point 2: The Gospel Builds Bridges, Not Barriers (vv. 22â24)
âTake these men, purify yourself⌠so everyone will knowâŚâ (vv. 23â24)
Paul doesnât fight back or make it about himself. He chooses to participate in a Jewish ceremonyânot because he has to, but to show respect and unity.
Paulâs goal: protect the gospel and keep peace among believers.
This is not compromiseâitâs compassion. Heâs laying down his rights to love people well (see 1 Cor. 9:19â23).
đ Application: What are you willing to give up in order to help others see Jesus clearly?
đŹ Gospel Connection: Jesus laid aside His rights (Phil. 2:6â8) to bring peace between God and sinners. Paulâs actions reflect that same sacrificial love.
đ Point 3: The Gospel Welcomes Everyone, But Changes Everything (v. 25)
đ Point 3: The Gospel Welcomes Everyone, But Changes Everything (v. 25)
âAs for the Gentile believers, we wrote them a letterâŚâ (v. 25)
The early church made it clear: you donât need to become Jewish to follow Jesus. Faith in Christ is what savesânot rule-keeping, rituals, or background.
But that doesnât mean anything goes. Following Jesus still means living a new wayâholy, set apart, different from the world.
đ Application: Jesus meets you right where you are, but He doesnât leave you there. He transforms you by His grace.
đŹ Gospel Connection: Salvation is free, but itâs not cheap. Jesus welcomes everyone, but He calls us to follow Him fully.
đ Conclusion: What This Means for Us
đ Conclusion: What This Means for Us
Like Paul, you may face rumors or misunderstandings. Be humble.
Like Paul, you may need to adjust your approach for the sake of love. Be wise.
Like the early church, we welcome everyoneâbut we point everyone to Jesus, who changes everything. Be clear.
