18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Disciples who make disciples - or as Hal Perkins says “disciple-makers”
How?
Understanding the Gospel
The King has come, the Kingdom has come
2. Sharing the gospel
Acts 1:8 NIV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
When the Spirit comes, He comes with power?
What is the manifestation of that power?
1 Corinthians 2:1–2 NIV
1 And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
1 Corinthians 2:3–5 NIV
3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
The Greek word for “demonstrated” used here is only used one time in the New Testament
The word used in the surrounding culture means a “conclusive proof”
Which could possible be understood as 100% proof
What is this conclusive “proof” or demonstration of God’s power?
Is it signs and wonders and miracles?
Though signs and wonders do point to the power of God, I don’t think that is the greatest power
Matthew 12:39–40 NIV
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
What is Jesus referring to? Well, it is His death and ultimately His resurrection!
It is the gospel!
Now Jesus clearly did signs and wonders, but He is saying that’s not the greatest power, it is in the gospel.
If we look to Romans 1, maybe we gain some more insight
Romans 1:16 NIV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
The demonstration of the Spirit’s power is salvation!
Life transformation is the greatest demonstration of God’s power!
I want you to think for a moment about your life transformation…what has God done for you?
Remember when you were saved and particularly what you were like before that?
So, as we continue talking about multiplication
Matthew 5:16 NIV
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Ephesians 4:29 NIV
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
2 Corinthians 1:3–5 NIV
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
2 Corinthians 1:6–7 NIV
6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
Comfort - parakletes - paraklete the HS
We are to be comforted so that we can comfort - multiplication
Now, before we can freely multiply, we need to be comforted!
Once we are comforted, we can truly comfort others!
The manifestation of God’s power is the transforming work of God in a person’s life!
God wants you to be free!
