2 Samuel 11:1-6
Opening:
David found himself at home when kings usually went to battle. He was resting from a long life of service to God, he had labored and fought for many years. In his time of rest he climbed to his roof, a place of enjoyment and relaxation. In this state he caught a glimpse of Bathsheba, when he looked on her beauty he lingered too long and lust conceived in his heart. The sin did not end here, Bathsheba became pregnant, David then was fully living in his sin, he had defiled Bathsheba, her husband and father. A lapse of judgement cost him dearly.
Being on The Roof Leads To:
I. Looking (v.1-2)
a. Most sin I have gotten myself into I stumbled upon and couldn’t say no to.
b. Most temptation comes in times of rest or weakness.
c. Being tempted is not sinful, but we must mortify our flesh.
II. Lingering (v.2c-4)
a. David could have turned around and went back in, but he lingered in this brief glimpse of temptation and it set its hooks in on him.
b. David knew who Bathsheba was, he had appreciated her beauty when he had seen her adorned in her clothes, this view of her beauty in nakedness was too tempting to resist.
c. Indulging temptation will have you feeling like someone else has a grip on your steering wheel.
III. Living (v.5-6)
Sub point
a. When David laid with Bathsheba the doors of his roof closed in on him.
b. He dragged down Bathsheba, her family, his family and himself.
c. David closed the doors behind him but he didn’t realize it until the prophet told him.
Husbands, that woman who shows you attention your wife don’t, wont love your babies like their momma. You wont be able to see the beauty of your wife if your looking off the roof at every other woman. No one else has labored for your home like she has.
Wives, that man who claims he can give to you all your emotional desires doesn’t work each day to provide for your home. His socks will stink just like your husbands, he will annoy you when he chews his food and he may very well drop you like a dirty shirt when he’s done ruining your home. If you can’t find anything to appreciate in your husband start by praying for yourself.
Children, you may rebel against your parents but they have been burned on the roof. That friend with a rebellious spirit didn’t feed your when you couldn’t feed your self, that boy or girl that can’t keep their hands off you didn’t clothe you when you couldn’t provide for yourself, your parents deserve your love and obedience because no one loves you like they do.
Maybe you have an attitude that sending our teens off to camp to “Get them fixed” like they are the problem. We are all at the risk of living on our roofs.
