1 Jn 3:4 Everyone who does sin also does lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness

So let’s break Q14 down word by word...

Sin is: (ASK THE KIDS IF THEY KNOW WHAT THESE WORDS MEAN - IF LOW ENGAGEMENT CHERRY PICK THE MOST IMPORTANT)

Deviating or turning away from, stepping away from, diverging from a set path or standard - its like going into the bushes instead of staying on the trail

God’s Law is His commandments - It is what God has told us we must do (ALSO LOOK AT Q37)

Deliberately means on purpose, intentionally, with forethought - I deliberately ate the cookie, not accidentally!

Accidentally is unintentional actions, not premeditated - Did you know that you could sin accidentally?!?!?! LET THEM ANSWER, GIVE EXAMPLES

Words are things spoken or written or communicated and includes not only words but also emojies and body language

Thoughts are things we are consciously thinking about

Deeds are things that we have done, works, actions

Error, Ignorance, Inattention, Missing the mark, irreligion, transgression, iniquity, lack of integrity, rebellion, treachery, perversion (twisting), Abomination, Debt

Is there a result or reaction from sin? WAIT

sinners become agitated Isaiah 57:20–21“But the wicked are like the tossing sea, For it cannot be quiet, And its waters toss up refuse and mud. “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.””

Physical/Spiritual Death Romans 6:23“For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Dull, hard hearted, insensitive to God Romans 1:21“For even though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

Guilt James 2:10“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”

What is God’s response? Psalm 5:5“The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all workers of iniquity.”

Restate

Is there a difference between guilt for sin and consequence for sin? CHOMPS SHOULD BE ABLE TO ARTICULATE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN, LIKE A DRUNK DRIVER CRASHING INTO ANOTHER CAR - THE OTHER CAR DID NOTHING WRONG BUT THEIR IS A RESULT TO THE SIN OF DRUNKENNESS

Guilt carries a penalty - death

What is our status as sinners - dead spiritually, hostile against God,

Colossians 1:21“And although you were formerly alienated and enemies in mind and in evil deeds,”

Ephesians 2:1–3“And you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all also formerly conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”

What is the status of Christians? DO CHRISTIANS SIN? YES! BUT THEY CAN REPENT AND BE FORGIVEN

Colossians 2:13–15“And you being dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive with Him, having graciously forgiven us all our transgressions. Having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us which was hostile to us, He also has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them in Him.”

Ephesians 2:4–10“But God, being rich in mercy because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

SO WHAT? ASK WHY ANY OF THIS MATTERS AT ALL

2 Corinthians 5:18–21“Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their transgressions against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. So then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as God is pleading through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
