Wanting Things in God's Timing

Here is a story of desire. A desire that was in the will of God, just out of His timing. It is important to want what God wants and when He want to do it.

The time of this story takes place when all the major powers of the ancient near east we in a state of decline Assyria, Egypt, and Babylon were no longer a threat to Israel. Israel’s neighbors were a potential problem. A recent arrival known as the Philistines from indo-european decent settled along the Judean coast. A divided Israel wanted to from a united front so they looked for a king.

Genesis 49:8–12 “Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: Thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; Thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion’s whelp: From the prey, my son, thou art gone up: He stooped down, he couched as a lion, And as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh come; And unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Binding his foal unto the vine, And his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes: His eyes shall be red with wine, And his teeth white with milk.”

This prophecy ultimately leads to Jesus, but God says that the sceptre will not depart from Judah.

The Israelites should have seen that God had a king in mind for them already

If God had a king in mind then He certainly would present Him at the correct time

The people requested a king from Samuel 1 Samuel 8:6 “But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.”

Imagine a time when you wanted something so bad that you did not care about what God wanted.

I can think of things that God ultimately gave me, but not when I wanted them.

I can tell you that I am glad that God didn’t do it in my timing. I am glad because I thought that I was ready. Let me assure you that I wasn’t.

1 Samuel 8:7 “And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.”

Imagine all the times when you don’t let God reign over you. God says that the Israelites rejected Him because they did not reign over them.

How many times have you rejected God?

How many times has God wanted to reign in your life and you won’t allow it?

Do you think that you know better than the Living God?

Remember that God promised the sceptre shall not depart from Judah

There is another who knew that promise as well.

This is where last episode comes in and why there was so much problem with the sons of Judah.

God has standards that no person on earth can meet, only God

I want you to see that God holds Himself to the same standard that He holds us to.

There is a part of God’s law in Deuteronomy 23:2 “A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the Lord.”

When God revealed that the Messiah would come from the line of Judah it is then when the enemy began to try and disrupt that line.

This leads us into the story from last episode and the reason that I taught the story in detail

In the birth of Pharez I showed you that he did not have a father in the sight of God because Judah was his grandfather already.

For this reason Israel could not have a king until David and David was not ready when the people wanted to replace Samuel and his sons with a king.

Ruth 4:18–22 “Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.”

Some people have a tendency to want to skip the genealogies in the Bible. I submit to you that the truth is in the details and it is good to study them. Another example this is the episode “Can Genesis 5 excite you?”

If the names are counted then you can see that there are ten generations before David.

This demonstrates the truthfulness of God and His Word. Not even God will break scripture John 10:35 “If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;”

David was the chosen king, but he was going to be ready at the time in which God prepared.

I can imagine the enemy thinking that he can outsmart God for another example of this look at my “Why a virgin birth” episode.

Take comfort knowing that God knew what was going to happen in Judah’s line and was prepared.

Take comfort that the very same David wrote Psalm 40:17 “But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; Make no tarrying, O my God.”

God thinks about us as well.

I encourage you to take this time and just notice the detail in the Bible. It truly has no equal on this earth. God demonstrates His faithfulness on every page, ever promise, and every detail. I hope you see that God keeps His word. If it is promised it will be completed. My desire is for you to want to spend time in the Word of God and get closed to Him.
