How can we love God whom we have not seen and hate our brother who we have seen?

In this passage John encourages his audience to love one another, because God is love and true love originates from God. Love is defined in 1 Corinthians 13, as patient, kind, selfless and enduring. The Father demonstrated his love for us by sending and giving His only begotten Son, John 3:16. The term “Love” has been misunderstood, throughout time. Many have associate it with “lust” worldly and carnal passion. But as believers and children of God we are to love our brothers and sisters as God has loved us.

In Luke 15:11-32 , the parable of the Prodigal Son, is demonstrated as a powerful example of mature love. In the story the younger son demands his inheritance from his father and he squanders it with a reckless life style. Life throws him a curve ball and he finds himself destitute and forced to work in undesirable conditions. He began to reason and become humble and desperate, so he takes a good look at his life and where he came from. He returns home hoping to be accepted back by his loving father as one of his hired servants.

Instead of anger and resentment the father extends mature love. When he sees him from afar, he is fill with compassion and sets out to embrace him forgetting what he had done. But he is joyful his son has returned home, and throws him a big party showering him with the best gift.

Our Heavenly Father, is the same, in spite of what we have done, and no matter how bad we have messed up, His love for us never changes and He is always willing to embrace us with open arms and say come on in my child.

Having brotherly love goes far beyond mere affection. It is the hallmark of discipleship and a character reflection of who Christ is.

Compassion involves understanding and sharing in the joys and sorrows of others, offering support and empathy in difficult times. This kind of Love is not superficial, but it involves genuine care and concerns for one another. John emphasizes we cannot truly claim to know God and persist in withholding sincere love for our brothers and sisters.

Just as I have demonstrated the story of the Prodigal Son, The Bible also give us another biblical narrative in the Book of Ruth, which show the genuine care and concerns Ruth has for Naomi, not wanting to leaver her side in a time of grief, need and sorrow, after the loss of her husband and later her two sons dies . Naomi is left with two daughter-in-laws who are now widows. She encourages them the go and return home to your mother’s home. They wept together and Oprah kissed her mother-in-law good bye and return home while Ruth clung to Naomi. Ruth then tells Naomi, “Don’t urge me to leave you, because where you go I will go , and where you lodge I will lodge. And your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the LORD do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.” the moral of the story Ruth had obviously bonded closer than ever with her mother-in-law Naomi, recognizing the suffering she experienced from the loss of her husband and two sons. Ruth had so much much compassion for Naomi that she did not want to leave her after all she had experienced. This was an act of genuine care and concern for one another.

When it comes to loving one another with the love of Christ, you must understand that genuine love is imparted by God and to those who are spiritually born again and have come to know him in a personal way. We cannot truly claim to know God and persist in withholding sincere Christian love for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. God does not love us because we deserve it. He love us because it is His nature. The greatest display of God’s love to us was sending His only begotten Son. And our motive for loving one another is that God first loved us.
