Intro: VBS…when did your view of God begin to sharpen (my eyesight)
“so we are cruel to ourselves if we try to live in this world without knowing about the God
whose world it is and who runs it.”
― J.I. Packer, Knowing God

God desires your heart and mind. Hebrews 8:7-10

V. 8 why the new covenant of God’s grace towards us
It is because god is finding fault in two places
Israel or the people of God
And the ineffectiveness of the covenant
We should not drive a wedge between the two, both are at fault
Emphasis is on the moral responsibility of the people of God/in essence their posture toward God is I refuse to obey/obedience is one of the signs of a converted life
Again, the Old Covenant did not provide the resources needed to spiritual transformation
Main Point: you have to take ownership for what you do, not what has been done to you
Cites Jeremiah 31:31-34
Jeremiah 31:31–34 ESV
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
What do we see from this…exile is not the final word..what will be the last word, the hope of the new covenant that is brought by Christ
The hope for God’s people is not in their piety
The hope for God’s people is found in Ezekiel 36:26-27.
Ezekiel 36:26–27 ESV
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rule
These things are possible with he coming of Jesus…what makes the difference in a person’s life?
Education
Material
Wealth
Stabile government and economy (these all help)
Therapy
What do you think the difference would be?
1 Corinthians 3:6 ESV
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.
Verse 9: the Old and New Covenant are different, lets think through this for a minute
The Old is not legalistic its based on grace.
Exodus 19:4 ESV
‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.
Yet, Israel had to keep its stipulations to be blessed
Leviticus 26:3–4 ESV
“If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.
Leviticus 26:14–16 ESV
“But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.
By Jeremiah’s time there were patterns of disobedience
722-exile of North Kingdom
586-exile of the Southern Kingdom
“ I showed no concern for you” they will experience the full curses of the covenant
V.10 the differences are elaborated on
THe promises given to Abraham can’t come yo reality if the people of God continue to transgress the law of God
What is the answer-the mind and heart are arrested and owned by Jesus/ a new master, a relational master
The law pointed to this new master:
Galatians 3:24 ESV
So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
God will be there God, we will be his people, this promise was given in Deuteronomy 30:6
Deuteronomy 30:6 ESV
And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.
The big difference in the covenant is that God writes on our hearts
We have to know him, that’s the key
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
What does it mean to know him, its means we are joined to him
Philippians 3:10 ESV
that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

God desires to know you fully. Vs. 11-13

God’s desire is to know you and love you fully, everything that comes with being who you are
There is a mixer of people regenerate and unregenerate, the new covenant brings a commitment to know the Lord and the Lord knowing the people, Matthew 7
THe sign in the old covenant was circumcision, but that doesn’t change the heart, it just affects the body nor does it help you obey the law, it just marked you to say you have made a commitment to live this way.
Where is the help? Have you ever felt helpless? Example of helplessness
The Spirit is your helper, the one who can help you know God and fully obey God
1 John 3:19 ESV
By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;
Let me give you some application…a lot of people put an emphasis on their law as and not God’s law
What does this look like?
I don’t like the way your raise your kids
I don’t like the songs you sing
I don’t like the way a person looks, they should look this way
You see the Gospel changes this, everything is seen through the lens of Jesus and this changes everything
We burden one another with our requests, our hang-ups, and our personal laws that we throw on people
We exhaust people with the yoke of our laws, when the yoke of Jesus is what they need
Verse 12: Jesus is merciful and wants to forgive yours sins, so quit trying to do this your self, it doesn’t work and it leaves you exhausted
When you sin, you grieve the Holy Spirit Ephesians 4:30
Ephesians 4:30 ESV
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
But you don’t leap frog one another with your personal purity and piety, your ability to be morality superior to another person, because they are not your standard nor your measure, that Jesus
Last question, what needs to vanish from your life?
