The Body Hurts When…
Introduction: Who has in their life broken a bone? Those who have broken a bone knows how painful it can be. Even if say it doesn’t hurt when it happens it may hurt more after you have relaxed for a moment. There are things we do that can hurt the church body.
1 Corinthians 12:25-27
1. The Body hurts when you leave the church
When you leave the church you are essentially taking a knife and cutting your hand off.
· 1 Corinthians 12:20-26
a. There are many people who leave the church and they leave because they don’t feel important. They leave because things aren’t going their way. They are telling the church that I have no need for you.
b. These people who leave, are the ones who choose money, sports, friends. These people say these things are more important than you.
· 2 Timothy 4:3-5
c. You hurt the body (Church) when you leave to be pleased by the ear. When you leave the church to be pleased you are telling the church the you are not important and my desires are.
d. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
e. When people leave there is an emotional hurt because for the longest time we thought we were on the same team and now we are not.
f. Imagine going to a sporting event with a friend of the same team just for him to change sides on you.
· Philippians 2:3-5
a. When you do these things, you are being selfish. We need to consider, is this right but is this going to hurt others.
b. Christ humbled himself to others, he was obedient, he died for you.
c. We need to be willing to sacrifice ourselves for the church like Christ did.
2. The body hurts when you miss church
· 1 Corinthians 12: 15-16
(a) Missing church is like when your foot falls asleep you have to walk around the house dragging you foot until it gets blood flow.
(b) When people miss church service, they don’t realize how important they are to the church. Many will say I don’t do much so my presents for one Sunday won’t hurt anybody, but it does.
· Hebrews 10:24-25
(a) We are supposed to encourage one another.
(b) We should be coming to church for 2 main reasons that is to strengthen our Christianity and encourage one another. When you don’t show up there is concern for you and worry and you discourage people. You will feel discouraged when someone else doesn’t show up.
(c) We are going through many trials and the only people that can truly be there for you is Christians
(d) During covid we were apart from each other for a couple months and when we came back to together the joy to see each other was amazing.
· Hebrews 3:12-13
(a) We encourage so that we can’t fall away.
(b) I know of three people who were discouraged. These few were close or had thought about leaving the church. These few didn’t leave because they knew how important it was to be in church and in my mind they have a strong desire for God. These few people had at least one person in their life to encourage them and help them along.
(c) I think of the story of Job and how his friends treated him
3. The body hurts when you don’t do your part.
Imagine climbing a ladder, when you climb a ladder you need your arms, legs, hands, feet, muscles, vision, senses to climb a ladder. If one of those body parts doesn’t do their part, it makes it difficult to climb a ladder. Some happens when we don’t do our part in the church.
· 1 Corinthians 12:17-18,27- 31
a. We all have a part in the church.
· Romans 12:4-13
a. Parts in the church
b. Men in the church service- teach, preach, exhort, lead, song lead, and pray.
c. Woman- teach the kids, teach other woman, be a good example
d. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
e. Both- pray for people, encourage, clean, yard maintenance, building maintenance, go calling, study with others, sing,
f. James 1:22
· 1 Corinthians 14:23-40
a. Church order
· Ephesians 5:23-24
We hurt the church when are not subject to Christ.
Conclusion:
What eventually happens when the body goes through enough pain and suffering? The body will die, that will eventually happen to the church when we don’t do these things. There will be no church, the good news is that Christ church will always reign here on earth, but will the church be here.
