Think and Do

Last week we talked about two women who Paul addressed with a plea to work together on behalf of the Gospel.
We also saw a very well known verse
Philippians 4:6–7 NRSVue
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
These verses are well used pre-scriptures handed out like candy to Christians
I am not belittling the verses
I am pointing out that you cannot quote tweet this and just expect a person to be better.
The question that follows reading this should be:
How?
And that is what we will address today.
Philippians 4:8–9 NRSVue
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. As for the things that you have learned and received and heard and noticed in me, do them, and the God of peace will be with you.
This passage is our text today.
You are likely hoping that we are out on time or early today!
We will see how it goes!
In the previous verse Paul said don’t be anxious, make your requests known, and the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds…
Here, Paul is giving an instruction that demonstrates how the God of Peace will be with you.
Notice this…
To have the peace of God you must have the God of peace.
Philippians 4:8 NRSVue
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Let’s take a look at what each of these things are:
Think on what is…
True, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy
*True*: The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and *faithfulness*. Exodus 34:6
**Honorable**: Evil plans are an abomination to the LORD, but **gracious** words are pure. Proverbs 15:26
**Just**: The lips of the **righteous** feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. Proverbs 10:21
**Pure**: The fear of the Lord is **pure**, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. Psalm 19:9
**Pleasing**: Let my prayer be counted as incense before you and the lifting up of my hands as an evening **sacrifice**. Psalms 141:2
**Commendable**: Let the righteous **rejoice** in the Lord and take refuge in him. Let all the upright in heart glory. Psalm 64:10
**Excellent**: They will recount the glorious splendor of your **majesty**, and on your wondrous works I will meditate. Psalm 145:5
**Praiseworthy**: Let another **praise** you and not your own mouth, a stranger and not your own lips. Proverbs 27:2
Philippians 4:9 NRSVue
As for the things that you have learned and received and heard and noticed in me, do them, and the God of peace will be with you.
