Making Sense of the Cross 3 | What Christ Saw
Making Sense of the Cross 3 | What Christ Saw
He Saw The Disgraced (Luke 22:54-62)
He Saw The Disgraced (Luke 22:54-62)
The Disloyal
Matthew 26:30–31 “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.” (Reference Zechariah 13:7)
The very ones He was looking at, was the one’s He was dying for.
The Devoted
John 19:26–27 “When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”
Christ was not focused on Himself, but on the very one’s He was looking at.
He Saw The Delight (Hebrews 12:1-2)
He Saw The Delight (Hebrews 12:1-2)
to be set before — verb. to be present or be set before someone so as to be visible (and enticing);
While Christ saw things on Calvary, His focus was on after Calvary! The joy of the atonement for sins for mankind!
He Saw Darkness (Luke 23:44)
He Saw Darkness (Luke 23:44)
Luke 22:53 “When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Darkness represents hell
Matthew 22:13 “Then said the king to the servants, Bind him (the man without a wedding garment) hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
2 Peter 2:4 “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;”
Jude 12–13 “These are spots in your feasts of charity when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.” (False teachers never saved)
Darkness represents our highway
Proverbs 2:12–15 “To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, From the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, And delight in the frowardness of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked, And they froward in their paths:”
Proverbs 4:19 “The way of the wicked is as darkness: They know not at what they stumble.”
Ecclesiastes 2:14 “The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.”
Isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; That put darkness for light, and light for darkness; That put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
John 3:19 “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
Darkness represents His Second Coming
Joel 2:1–2 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: For the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, A day of clouds and of thick darkness, As the morning spread upon the mountains: A great people and a strong; There hath not been ever the like, Neither shall be any more after it, Even to the years of many generations.”
Amos 5:18 “Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! To what end is it for you? The day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.”
Amos 5:20 “Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?”
Zephaniah 1:14–15 “The great day of the Lord is near, It is near, and hasteth greatly, Even the voice of the day of the Lord: The mighty man shall cry there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, A day of trouble and distress, A day of wasteness and desolation, A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness,”
Acts 2:20 “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:”
BE IT KNOWN. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW CHRIST IN THE FREE PARDON OF SIN BEFORE YOU DIE OR BEFORE HE COMES, YOU WILL BE JUDGED FOR YOUR SIN AND PLACED IN A LAKE OF FIRE FOR ETERNITY.
Because Christ was saw darkness, we can be brought into light!
Joshua 24:5–7 “I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out. And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea. And when they cried unto the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.”
Psalm 107:10–15 “Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, Being bound in affliction and iron; Because they rebelled against the words of God, And contemned the counsel of the most High: Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; They fell down, and there was none to help. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And brake their bands in sunder. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!”
Because of Christ being in darkness, we no longer have to go to hell, we can go to heaven!
John 12:46 “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”
Colossians 1:12–13 “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”
1 Peter 2:9 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”
Because of Christ being in darkness, we no longer have a dark highway, but a lighted path!
John 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Ephesians 5:8 “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:”
Because of Christ being in darkness, we won’t have to worry about seeing Him in judgment!
1 Thessalonians 5
Our job is to help spread the light so others can see!
Acts 26:13–18 “At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”
2 Corinthians 4:3–4 “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
