Sometimes our “helping” is actually hurtful.
Sometimes our “helping” is actually hurtful.
Through this series we have found “fault” with Job’s three friends and we know that sometimes life happens not because of our sin but because of supernatural reasons.
Job held onto his blamelessness.
Job held onto his blamelessness.
Job 31.5-6 helps us to see that even after all the speeches he beleives that he has done no wrong. I do not think this is an issue per say but it can turn into self-righteousness.
We must be careful with how we respond.
We must be careful with how we respond.
It is not always what happens to us but how we respond to what happens which matters.
When emotions are intense, words must be few.
When emotions are intense, words must be few.
There is debate about how mad Elihu would be but I think regardless we need to hear this wisdom about being careful what is said and done with emotions are intense.
Elihu’s fault—assigning motives to Job.
Elihu’s fault—assigning motives to Job.
Chapter 34 we find the Elihu accuses Job of trying to be above God. It appears that Elihu thinks Job just wants his benefits back.
We cannot simplify God to on trait.
We cannot simplify God to on trait.
Elihu and the friends of Job try to simplify God down to one trait—justice. Even Job falls into this. We to can do so intentionally and unintentionally.
Our life is on loan from God.
Our life is on loan from God.
We see this in Job 33 and again in Job 34.14. We msut remember this today.
The Spirit of God has made me;
the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
God is not accountable to us!
God is not accountable to us!
We do not hold God accountable in the sense of her needs us or must give us a reason for why thigns happen.
“But I tell you, in this you are not right,
for God is greater than any mortal.
God does not do wrong!
God does not do wrong!
Whatever God does is right. His ways are right! God cannot sin and still be God.
It is unthinkable that God would do wrong,
that the Almighty would pervert justice.
God is big and must be feared.
God is big and must be feared.
We cannot just approach God like he is one of us; because He is not! Job 36-37 helps to point this out for us. As teh maker of the heavens and Earth he is much bigger nad powerful than we are.
God uses our circumstances to speak.
God uses our circumstances to speak.
Since God is “big” he is able to use even the bad to speak to us. Elihu makes this point but I want us to be careful here. When we are in the midst of pain sometimes hearing, “God is speaking to you through this” is not very helpful. It is true 100% but it may push someone away. If we are not careful we equate God spekaing to our pain with causing our pain.
God is near!
God is near!
Elihu, the Israelites, and ancient world did not believe this to be true. Yet we know it to be true because Jesus came. God is not afraid to be near us. We also see this in Job as God responds.
