1 JOHN 1:1-4 FELLOWSHIP AND JOYFUL CONFIDENCE ARE THE RESULTS OF RIGHT BELIEF ABOUT JESUS. 1 JOHN 1:5-2:2 WE ARE SINNERS AND JESUS IS THE SOLUTION TO OUR SIN— FOR SALVATION AND RIGHTEOUS LIVING! 1 JOHN 2:3-17 Obeying God And Loving One Another Reveal A Right Relationship With God. 1 JOHN 2:18-27 FAITHFULLY BELIEVING THE GOSPEL TRUTH REVEALED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS MY FAITH. OUR RESPONSIBILITY: IDENTIFY LIES, BELIEVE TRUTH, REST IN THE HOLY SPIRITS WORK IN OUR HEARTS. 1 JOHN 2:28-3:3 CONFIDENCE IN OUR FUTURE STANDING BEFORE GOD, GOD’S LOVE, AND OUR FUTURE COMPLETE SANCTIFICATION SHOULD MOTIVATE US TO RIGHTEOUS LIVING TODAY. I JOHN 3:4-10 DON’T BE DECEIVED ABOUT THE NATURE OF SIN AND ITS LACK OF POWER OVER YOU. 1 JOHN 3:11-18 WE MUST REVEAL THE LOVE OF GOD BY LOVING OTHER BELIEVERS GENUINELY THROUGH EVERYDAY ACTIONS. Assurance of Salvation 1 JOHN 3:19-24 ASSURANCE OF SALVATION 1. We can have assurance in the midst of a condemning heart. 19-20 2. Who God is gives great comfort to our hearts in the midst of doubt! 20 3. Confidence in our salvation leads to trusting in God in our prayer. 21-22 ASSURANCE OF SALVATION 4. Confidence in our salvation leads to loving one another. 23 5. The security of our salvation is guaranteed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 24 WHEN YOU HEART IS OVERWHELMED BY DOUBT, REST IN THE CHARACTER AND WORK OF GOD ALLOWING DOUBT TO TURN INTO TRUST YOU ACT UPON! REST IN THE CHARACTER AND WORK OF GOD TO OVERCOME DOUBT! APPLICATION 1. I don’t have to live in doubt! God desires me to have confidence in my salvation. 2. I must remember that my salvation is not based upon how I feel! God accomplishes the work of salvation when I place my trust in Him. 5 STEPS TO SPEAKING TRUTH TO YOUR HEART IN THE MIDST OF DOUBT. 1. Observe Life Indicators: My salvation is not based upon whether I have sinned or not. God does not call me to sinless perfection but do my overall life choices and direction of life point to seek to obey God and love other Christians. The answer doesn’t determine salvation, it simply indicates salvation. Do I care about obeying God and loving others? 5 STEPS TO SPEAKING TRUTH TO YOUR HEART IN THE MIDST OF DOUBT. 2. Confess Known Sin: Deal with any sin that may be making you wonder if you are saved. God wants right relationship with you. 3. Rest in God’s Character: God is greater than my heart – even in the midst of my doubt, remind yourself that God is the one that knows I am saved and preserves me. 5 STEPS TO SPEAKING TRUTH TO YOUR HEART IN THE MIDST OF DOUBT. 4. Remember the Holy Spirit and His work: Thank the Holy Spirit for keeping you in the hand of God. The Holy Spirit is way more powerful than my own flesh. 5. Obey God in Next Step: Determine next step of obedience by asking what does God want me to do next, then do it – that obedience reveals your salvation. REST IN THE CHARACTER AND WORK OF GOD TO OVERCOME DOUBT!
