Good Morning!
Introduction
Why did God Create you? God created us to glorify him and enjoy him forever.
Last night we talked about sin, and how sin impacted Adam and Eve.
we defined sin as being “James 4:17 (ESV) 17So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” One of the things that we didn’t really talk about last night is how sin isn’t just a small thing. It wasn’t about the fruit, it was about the fact that God told them not to do it. GOd told them not to do it because God knew the consiquences that would come from them disobeying him.
I have a friend that told me a funny story about his childhood. He said that when he was 4 years old he had a fascination with electrical outlets. And his parents told him over and over that he should not mess with them. One day my friend was extra persistant. So he grabbed a key and was going to plug it into the socket, his parents caught him and said don’t you dare put that key in the socket. And then they put him in time out. A little later that day he grabbed a screw driver. And be began to put it into the socket. Yet again mom and dad warned him, once again he was put in time out. Well the next day, my friend went looking around the house to see if his parents where are round and they where not. so this time he grabbed a butter knife. And he ran over to the electrical outlet and before he be stopped, he jammed the butter knife into the electrical outlet. And he got the sock of his life. Now it was amazing that he wasn’t killed, he got burn and sock, and when his parents found out, they gave him some more discipline. When I heard this story from my friend Wayne, he told me that after the tears ended and burn was taken care of his dad sat him down and said to him. Now you know the reason why I didn’t want you to stick anything in the outlet. I was just trying to save you from getting hurt. With Adam and Eve they thought that God was holding out on them. They thought that God was limiting there ability to be wise, that God was trying to keep them from being more like him. But, in actuality God was trying to preserve them from the pain that would come along with eating of the fruit. You see Adam and Eve didn’t just sin with their actions, they sinned first and foremost by what they thought and then with what they did.
There where consequences that came along with eating the fruit. They got kicked out of the garden, for man work would be hard, for the woman she would have pain in child bearing, for the serpent he was destine to be one who would dwell on the ground and death was brought into the world. Adam and Eves sin meant that they could no longe live in fellowship with the God that created them. And what it meant was that when someone died they would be separated from God. Now most of us might think that what Adam and Eve did, wasn’t exactly a big deal. I mean it was only a piece of fruit. But Adam and Eve’s Sin impact way more then just them. There sin impacted the would world.
Sins impact
Romans 5:12 (ESV) 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned. Sin has impacted everything. Every person that would be born after Adam and Eve would be a sinner. Why, because sin became an in grained, part of humanity, it was now something that would be handed down from one to another to another. And no one could stop it. So we are born in sin. We born with a heart that desire to sin. I often us this example. I am a parent to 4 lovely children. JJ, Grace,Justus and Joy and over the year my wife Erin and I have taught them many things. Espeecially because Erin has homeschooled them. We taught them to eat, how to be potty trained, how to put there cloths on, how to put away their toys, how to get clean in the shower and many, many more things. Most of my life has been teaching them things. But you wanna know the one thing that I never spent any of my time teaching them? I didn’t have to teach them how to sin. They where born that way.. I actually had to teach them how not to sin. Why is that, because Adams sin was passed down to them. We are sinner because Adam was a sinner and he handed down sin to us.
I know it is supper easy for us to blame Adam or maybe blame Eve, but you know what if they wouldn’t have done it I would have, or your would have. Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” tell us that every one has sinned. That every person to walk this earth with the exception of Jesus. has sinned. Everyone. We are sinners because Adam infected us with Sin and we are sinners because we choose to sin.
I know you might be thinking Pastor J I am not that bad! Have you ever lied? Have you ever stole? have you ever said mean works to your brother or sister or mom or dad? have you ever hated anyone? I know you might be thinking how can one little thing make me so bad?
DOG POOP BROWNIE!
In the same way that Adam and Eve where taken out of Gods presence because of there sin, you and are not allowed to be in God’s presence because of our sin. That we are not able to bring him glory we are not able to enjoy him because sin has robbed us for that ability. That when we die our sin has caused us to be separated from God for all of an eternity.
So often I have heard people say that when i die I God will let me in to heaven because I have been a good person. He is going to weigh my good and my bad and if that good out weighs the bad he will let me. But that is simply not true. Romans 3:10–12 (ESV) 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” that as those who are under Adams curse as those who are sinners, we are not given entrance to heaven because there sin. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death. Death is seperation form God for all of an eternity in a place called hell. So many people think that this wont be a big deal. Because at least Ill be with my friends. It is a big deal for two reason. 1) You and I where created to live in community with God. We were created to love him and spend our days with him. One of the reasons why hell is so awful is because God isn’t there. It is so awful because you are denied the ability to do the thing that you where created to do. 2) is so awful because it is a place of constant pain and suffering. This is really bad news, this is a really hard things. But you know what, even when God was telling Adam and Eve the punishments that they would receive for what they had done. He gave them hope.
God fixes what we have broken.
Turn with me to Genesis 3:15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” God promised that He would send one to deal with the snake. This is a metaphor, that God would send someone to come and deal with sin. He would come and deal with what the satan brought into the world. That God would send someone to restore the relationship that you and I broke with God through our sin. Why would God do that, because he loves us. John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
God love us so much that he wanted to restore the relationship that sin broke. Romans 5:15–19 “But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”
Adam might have messed things up But God sends his son to fix that which has been broken. One of the things that we talked about earlier this week was that God is to like us. He is one God in 3 persons. He nis God the Father, God the Holy Spirit and God the Son. God’s love for us is so great that he gave his son for us in order that we might receive a restored relationship with God, so that we might not be separated from God for all of eternity. How is this restoration of the relationship happen. It happens by Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. What we earned for our sin was death, was separation from God for all of an eternity, was punishment. But, instead God sent his son so that he might pay the price for our sins.
Romans 5:10 “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” That how God felt about us we where his enemies, and even while we where that God sent his son to die for us.
God gives us two things when Jesus died for us. Mercy and Grace . Mercy literally means not getting what you deserve. You deserve punishment for not obeying your parents. That you deserve not spending time with God in heaven. Mercy means that God doesn’t give you that. Instead he give you grace is getting what you don’t deserve. It is like you coming to school to take a test that you have not studied for and you take that test. The next day you find out that you got a 100 percent, but the more you look at the test you find out, that you got every answer wrong. What happened you got what you did not deserve. You got a 100 because your teacher was being gracious to you. Ephesians 2:4–5 (ESV) 4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Knowing that salvation
All of these things are true. Adam and Eve and you and I sinned and broke Gods law, God paid us what was owed to us because our sin, which is death and hell, but when he did that he promised that he would send one to come and deal with our sin. That person was his son Jesus Christ. who came to this world perfect, with out sin. And he lived and he died for the purpose to free you from your sin. That his death paid the price that you owed for your sin. These are the facts that the bible tell us. One of the things that bible tells us is that these trues must be recieved or believed if they are going to make any impact in our lives. SIght a verse here!
Romans 10:9–13 (ESV) 9because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Acknowledge that you are a sinner in need of a savior.
Believe that Jesus is the one who has come to save you
Commit to live your life as his word commands.
