Sing Mighty to Save and Rock of Ages Cleft for me.
Let’s begin with the hottest verse on the internet.
Genesis 6:4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
This verse is the hottest verse on the internet because of really one word giants. And for some reason people have lost their silly minds over that one word. I hope that you understand that word is interesting it may get an afternoon of your attention, it may even lead to an interesting Bible study in which you will lead down roads you may not want to go. I hope you understand that I prefer words like GRACE and Redemption. But that word giant is Nephilim which means fallen one. People get all sorts of ideas about that word and books have been written and the internet videos are out there constantly. Because it is good clickbait obsessed people with side topic go crazy and miss the point of the grand theme of the Bible. BUT, there is another word here. Mighty Men. So this very controversial verse says that one days their were some children born her and usually after people get past giants and sons of God they stop reading. But it says that these offspring were MIGHTY MEN or if you look it up they are Gibbor.
Gibbor - Hero
Genesis 10:8–9 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.”
The word gibbor is more complicated than the word hero it means powerful warrior with exceptional physical strength and agility a valiant man.
God is very brief about the wickedness in the time of the flood, but whoever the Nephilim and the Sons of God were they became a false hero or champion of wickedness on the earth. After the flood a man by the name of Nimrod comes on the scene. The King of Babel. He was a hero a champion of the people and he built a tower to heaven the Tower of Babel. Interesting I checked the word study. This passage more appropriately may say he was a mighty hunter against the LORD. just change one word, you can go do a quick word study too. The word often has the meaning before like change that one word from before to against like in Genesis 13.13 where it says the men of sodom were wicked agaist the LORD same exact word.it would fit once again as against. Nimrod is not out there in a field hunting buffalo by day and building a tower at night. Well maybe he was, but I believe that He was following in the spirit of Lucifer. Hunting the position of God in this world. He was against the God that saved Great Grandpa, Noah from the flood. He was a mighty champion hero of the people to go right back to the way things were before the flood a champion or hero for evil. The world was graving a CHAMPION for what is right El Gibbor - The mighty God my hero
If you remember El Olam The everlasting God he was introduced to Abraham and Abimelech if you remember El Shaddai Almighty Creator introduced to Abraham and El Elyon God most high but you get to El Gibbor and that is introduced to Moses in Deuteronomy 10 very interesting to me. This isn’t something I read but I find it interesting in my studies, Moses is coming close to the land of Canaan they are finally encountering the giants that Joshua and Caleb told them about, read the beginning of Deuteronomy the Amalekites the rephaim the Nephalim Anakim the Avim and the emim. I have the meanings of those names all written in my Bible. The terrible ones the dead ones the blood thirsty ones the fallen ones. NOT GOOD, we read about Og up to 15 feet tall makes Goliath look like a shrimp. People always get upset with the God of the OT who drives out and destroys these people. But they don’t understand the story these are Canaanite Champions of evil. Deuteronomy 1-3 God defeats Og and Cronnies Deut 4-9 prepare to enter the land revisiting Kadesh in D 9 D 10 El Gibbor and then D 10.19 love the stranger The Bible says Than you know what happened after that.
The heroes of the land are too strong.
Numbers 13:28–29 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land
We can’t do it.
Numbers 13:31–33 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
They couldn’t do it. Only El Gibbor, the Mighty God (our hero), could do it.
There are a lot of heroes in this life. I know I had a bad hero problem growing up. I had Michael Jordan a sports star, I had rock stars, I had a horse trainer, I people who I admired, some people have had a politician or a historical figure or spouse or a friend be their HERO their champion and they can only do so much for you.
Jesus is your hero!
Revelation 5:12 saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!
But I want to develop this even further. The Devil would love for you to have him and his be your champion the Gibbor in Genesis 6.4 Nimrod and his tower of Babel, Og of Bashan and his giants and the countless other things today that would love to be your champion. Maybe it’s a baseball player maybe it’s a pastor. I will tell you this every year someone comes to me with the story of a disgraced Christian leader. Maybe it’s a politician the most popular president of all time was Richard Nixon in 1972 he won a landsilde reelection winning 49 of 50 states he was to be the American Champion He had one of the highest approval ratings ever in February of 1973 at over 70% and then watergate happened and his popularity plummeted to 23% one year later the lowest of any president ever. I am just saying the only hero you need is Jesus.
I don’t know everything about the giants in the Bible. Frankly the topic is frightening to me, I will just say this I believe that men like Nimrod and Og were champions of the devil. I believe that they are the seed of the serpent referenced in Genesis 3 where God says that I will put enmity between you and her between thy seed and her seed. They are in the spirit of antichrist as John would put it. and the one who crushes all this world’s champions the real hero in this world is JESUS!
Jesus is El Gibbor!
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
This verse is talking about JESUS without question. Anyone ever been to church around Christmas time. I have talked about the significance of this prophecy about the birth of the Christ child time and again. and If you want me to I will stress it again. BUT THIS IS JESUS and what is the name of God highlighted in this verse. MIGHTY GOD that is El Gibbor Jesus is our Champion and I believe he is the one who is mighty to save! I tell you what when you put all that together. The bad side of Gibbor, the champions of evil and then you get God’s answer. The Champion who will not only be a Champion but the Son of God equal with the Father and it’s Jesus. I believe that every name of God in the Bible has meaning. Deep intense meaning. His power will never waiver. He will never let you down He is the Mighty God.
Jesus is mighty in battle.
Psalm 24:8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle.
I love love love Psalm 22 23 and 24 I know everyone knows Psalm 23 but if you really want to understand that important Psalm you must put it together with the other two it is often called the Messianic trilogy of Psalms Psalm 22 My God My God why have you forsaken me He trusted in the LORD let Him rescue Him The pierced my hands and feet. Those all come from Psalm 22 talking without doubt about the suffering Savior. Psalm 23 is the relationship we enjoy with the resurrected Lord and His shepherding care. and Psalm 24 is His Sovereign Kingship. Who can ascend into the hill of the LORD. He who has clean hands and a pure heart. Who is the King of Glory the LORD strong and Mighty. I just picture the Messiah found in Daniel 7 Jesus the Mighty God.
Jesus is the Mighty King of Glory!
Daniel 7:13–14 I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.
I want you to remember this. I have said it so many times Jesus is Daniel’s Messianic Song of Man. In Daniel 7 He is the beast slayer the cloud rider and the king of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is the Mighty God!
Jesus proved His might on the Cross.
John 3:14–15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, the story where the children of Israel sinned they complained against the LORD in the wilderness. There is no food no water. God sent firey serpents into the camp to bight the people. Moses held up the bronze serpent with a simple message LOOK and LIVE John says the Son of Man Daniel’s Son of Man the Cloud rider beast slayer and King of Kings will be lifted up on the cross just like Psalm 22 to be the Mighty God that would die for us on Calvary to be our champion our King of Glory who has clean hands and a pure heart and he provided us, purchased for us propitiated our sin debt if you need three ps on Calvary So we can have eternal life. That is our Mighty God.
El Gibbor brings Israel and the prodigal home.
Isaiah 10:21 “The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, To the Mighty God.”
God brought judah back from captivity in Babylon, a great Miracle. I believe that one of the greatest miracles that everyone can see in the modern age is the nation of Israel as dead in the water during the holocost being brought back to their homeland in droves to being a thriving nation today. The same Mighty God that did that is the same Mighty God who brings the prodigal home. I am telling you if you have a child or grandchild running from the LORD PRAY HARD. God is Mighty to Bring the Prodigal home.
El Gibbor is more than just stronger than the enemy.
Jeremiah 32:18 You show lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them—the Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
Jesus is mighty above devil and his heros. He is stronger than any football player or weightlifter. BUT His might is just about physical strength and agility. He is Mighty to Save. Mighty to Heal. Mighty to do anything that you need. Mighty to take care of all your problems physical and spiritual.
El Gibbor is Mighty to Save!
Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.
Once again this verse like Isaiah 20 in context is talking about Jerusalem the Jew in their day of trouble but the same is true of You He is mighty to Save. Mighty to save you from your sins.
Rejoice for the Champion.
Luke 15:8–10 Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
That is my Champion the one who leaves the 99 to find the one lost. The who came to seek and to save those who were lost. He topples giants, He slays our adversary the beast and He quiets your heart, He will never let you down He is the Mighty God the one who quiets the hear He is your rock. Maybe you are here today and you need His mighty power. If you are lost if you feel cheated or let down. If you realize that you are sinner, who needs to find his way home. Let Jesus be your Savior Your Champion the host of heaven will rejoice when claim Him Believe on the LORD Jesus and you will be saved. Come to the altar.
