Lesson One

Acts 11:25–26 “25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.”
Why should the disciples be called Christians?
Let’s define the word “disciple.”
Matthew 28:19–20 “19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
3. Are we to reproduce other disciples?
4. By whose name are we to baptize them?
5. Does making disciples stop at baptism?
6. What else are we to do?
7. What is Jesus promise?
2 Peter 1:3 “3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,”
8. What has God granted to us?
9. How does He impart these blessings?
1 John 1:7 “7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Titus 3:5 “5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,”
10. Name two items which are necessary to salvation.
James 2:17 “17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
James 2:24 “24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”
11. What must accompany faith for it to live?
1 John 5:3 “3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”
12. Does God teach us how to love?
John 14:15 “15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
13. Tell me about John 14:15.
1 John 3:10 “10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”
1 John 3:24 “24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.”
14. How do we maintain a relationship with God?
Matthew 7:21 “21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
15. Is doing the will of the Father God the same as keeping His commandments?
John 3:16–17 “16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
Luke 13:3 “3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
16. Explain the will of God in these two passages.
Acts 3:19 “19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,”
17. Explain what it means to turn back.
Matthew 10:32 “32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,”
18. How important is it it confess (acknowledge) Jesus Christ before other people?
Acts 2:38 “38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
19. What are the two commands, the purpose and the promise in Acts 2:38?
1 Peter 3:21 “21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,”
21. Is baptism essential to salvation?
Mark 16:16 “16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
22. What is the reward of believing and being baptized?
23. What is the reward of not believing?
Acts 8:38 “38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.”
24. What element is water done in?
Romans 6:3–4 “3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
Where do we meet the death, burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus?
Galatians 3:27 “27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
25. How does one enter Christ?
Acts 4:12 “12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.””
26. By whose name or authority are we saved by?
Acts 10:48 “48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.”
27. Is baptism a command?
Revelation 2:10 “10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
28. No matter how difficult the journey, how long are we to be faithful to Jesus Christ?
What is the reward?
