The Parable of The Elder Brother - Luke 15

Introduction:

Last week, we studied Epaphroditus—a faithful servant in the New Testament who quietly risked his life to support the Apostle Paul and the work of the gospel (Philippians 2:25–30).

Epaphroditus may not be a household name, but his story teaches us about faithfulness, humility, and sacrificial service—qualities every Christian should strive for.

Today, we continue this series by examining another lesser-discussed figure, but one who stands in stark contrast to Epaphroditus—the Older Brother in Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:25–32).

While Epaphroditus exemplified loyalty and service, the Older Brother represents those who appear loyal and faithful outwardly but inwardly are filled with bitterness, pride, and unforgiveness.

Jesus told this parable in response to the Pharisees and scribes who criticized Him for welcoming sinners (Luke 15:1–3). The Older Brother is His pointed message to those religious leaders—and to any of us who struggle with self-righteousness and resentment.

Though he never left the Father’s house, the Older Brother was still lost.

This teaches us a vital lesson: You can be physically close to God yet far from Him in heart.
