Scripture: Acts 1:1–11 Bottom Line: Jesus didn’t call you to watch. He called you to witness.
Engage: Have you ever watched someone else live out your dream—while you just stood on the sidelines? Maybe you were waiting for the right timing, for more clarity, or for someone to give you permission. That’s where the disciples are in Acts 1: they’ve seen the resurrection, but they’re still standing still.
They ask Jesus, “Are you going to fix everything now?” Jesus responds—not with answers, but with assignment.
Encounter: Let’s walk through Acts 1:1–11:
Verses 1–3: Luke reminds us that Jesus began something. The mission is in motion, and the Church is going to carry it.
Verses 4–5: Jesus tells them to wait—but not forever. Wait for the Holy Spirit, not a detailed plan.
Verse 8 (Key Verse):
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” Jesus doesn’t say, “You might be,” or “You should be.” He says, “You will be.” And He doesn’t say “leaders,” “experts,” or “influencers”—He says witnesses. People who tell the truth about what they’ve seen.
Verses 9–11: Jesus ascends—and the disciples just… stare. And the angels say, “Why are you looking at the sky?”In other words: It’s time to go.
Reveal: Jesus didn’t call you to watch. He called you to witness. He didn’t give you the Holy Spirit so you could sit still and stay safe. He gave you power so you could go and speak.
The world doesn’t need more spectators. It needs more Spirit-filled witnesses.
Empower: How do we live out that calling?
Stop waiting for perfect conditions. The disciples didn’t get a full plan—they got a promise.
Be a witness. You don’t have to be impressive—just honest about what Jesus has done.
Let the Spirit lead. Power comes after obedience, not before.
Start local, live global. Jerusalem first. Then the world. You don’t need a passport—you need faith where you are.
You’re not on the bench. You’re on the field. And Jesus didn’t call you to watch. He called you to witness.
