✝️Put God First When Things Seem Impossible – He Will Make a Way
📖 Matthew 6:33 – "Seek God’s kingdom above all else. Live right, and he will give you everything you need."
Introduction: When You Feel Stuck
We all face problems in life that feel impossible. Maybe it’s money trouble, a broken friendship, a health problem, or a feeling of sadness or fear you can't shake. In these moments, it feels like there’s no way out.
The Bible teaches us to put God first. This isn't just good advice; it's our whole reason for being. The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks, "What is the chief end of man?" The answer is: "To glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever." This means our main purpose is to honor God and find our joy in Him.
When we put God first in our problems, we are doing the very thing we were made to do. We are saying that He is more important than our fears, and we are trusting Him to make a way.
I. God is Bigger Than Your Problem
I. God is Bigger Than Your Problem
📖 Luke 1:37 – “For with God, nothing will be impossible.”
This is a powerful truth. God is all-powerful. He is not limited by our problems or by what makes sense to us. The Belgic Confession says that God’s power is so great that He "is able to do all that he desires." When you feel powerless, you are invited to trust the God who has all power.
🔍Bible Story: The Red Sea Miracle (Exodus 14)
The people of Israel were trapped. They had mountains on both sides, the huge Red Sea in front of them, and an angry army chasing them from behind. They were terrified and thought they were going to die.
But their leader, Moses, told them to put God first. He said, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today.”
God did something amazing. He split the Red Sea in half, and the people walked through on dry ground. He turned their trap into a path to safety.
💡 Simple Lesson: Your problem doesn’t have to be easy for God—He just needs you to trust Him. When you admit you can't do it on your own and give the problem to Him, you make room for His strength to work.
🧠 Question: When a problem comes up, do you worry first or pray first?
II. Let Go and Let God Work
II. Let Go and Let God Work
📖 Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways, look to Him, and He will show you the right path.”
We often try to hold on tightly to our problems, thinking we can fix them ourselves. But the Bible tells us to "let go" and give them to God. This is only possible when we understand a key truth: God is in control of everything. This loving, sovereign control is called 'providence.' When we stop trying to manage everything and instead trust His providence, God can start working in ways we could never imagine.
The Heidelberg Catechism explains God's providence beautifully. It says that the rain, the sun, good years and bad years, health and sickness, wealth and poverty—"all things come to us not by chance but by his fatherly hand."
🔍 Bible Story: Hannah’s Prayer for a Child (1 Samuel 1)
A woman named Hannah was heartbroken because she could not have a child. To make it worse, another woman made fun of her all the time.
Instead of getting angry, Hannah went to God’s house and poured out all her sadness in prayer. She didn't just ask for a son—she promised that if God gave her one, she would give him back to God to serve Him. She put God’s wishes first.
God heard her prayer. She had a baby boy named Samuel, who grew up to be one of Israel’s greatest leaders.
💡 Simple Lesson: Letting go is hard, but it’s also freeing! It means you believe God’s plan is better than your own. When you release your problem to God, He can begin to release His blessings to you.
🧠 Question: What are you trying to control right now instead of trusting God's fatherly hand?
III. Look at God, Not at Your Problem
III. Look at God, Not at Your Problem
📖 2 Chronicles 20:12 – “We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you.”
What you focus on gets bigger. If you stare at your problem all day, it will seem huge and scary. But if you focus on God, He will seem bigger, and your problem will start to look smaller.
What happens when we truly believe God is in control? The Heidelberg Catechism says that knowing this helps us to be "patient in hard times" and "thankful in good times." It also gives us a "firm trust in our faithful God and Father that nothing will separate us from his love."
🔍 Bible Story: King Jehoshaphat’s Big Battle (2 Chronicles 20)
A giant enemy army was coming to attack the small kingdom of Judah. The king, Jehoshaphat, was terrified.
But the first thing he did was ask everyone in the kingdom to pray. He prayed a simple prayer: “We are not strong enough… We don’t know what to do, so we are looking to You.”
God answered, “This battle is not yours to fight; it is mine!” God told them to send their singers out in front of the army. As they praised God, the enemy armies got confused and fought each other instead. Judah won the battle without even fighting!
💡 Simple Lesson: Your problem is never too big for God. When you look to Him, He calms your heart and fights for you. Praising God is a way to show you trust Him, even before you see the answer.
🧠 Question: In your current struggle, are your eyes on your problem, or are they on God?
IV. Obey God, Even When It's Hard
IV. Obey God, Even When It's Hard
📖 1 Kings 17:8–16 – The Story of the Widow
Sometimes God asks us to do things that don't make sense. But when we obey Him and put Him first, He provides for us in amazing ways.
When we have faith, it shows in our actions. The Belgic Confession teaches that true faith "cannot be inactive." In other words, real trust in God will lead us to obey Him, even when it's difficult.
🔍 Bible Story: The Widow and Elijah
There was no rain, and people had no food. A poor widow was getting ready to make one last meal for her and her son, and then they expected to die.
Just then, God’s prophet, Elijah, came and asked her to make him some bread first.
This seemed crazy! But she chose to obey. She put God first by feeding His prophet.
Because she obeyed, God did a miracle. Her jar of flour and jug of oil never ran out until the rain came back.
💡 Simple Lesson: Obedience is faith in action. You don't always have to understand why God asks you to do something; you simply need to trust Him enough to obey. This act of trust is what opens the door to His blessings.
🧠 Question: What is one small thing God might be asking you to do to put Him first?
V. Jesus Shows Us How to Trust God
V. Jesus Shows Us How to Trust God
📖 Luke 22:42 – “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
The greatest reason we can trust God is Jesus. He is our perfect example, and He is our Savior who holds us securely.
The Heidelberg Catechism begins with this amazing comfort: "What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ."
🔍 Bible Story: Jesus in the Garden
Jesus was about to face the cross, and He was filled with pain and sadness.
He asked God if there was any other way. But in the end, He chose to put God's will first. He said, "I want what You want, not what I want."
What looked like a terrible end became the world’s greatest victory—Jesus came back to life and offered salvation to everyone.
True peace comes from knowing you belong to
Jesus. Because of Him, you can trust God’s plan, even when it’s hard. Your
darkest moment can become a story of God’s power because Jesus has already
won the victory for you.💡 Simple Lesson:
🧠 Question: Can you say with your whole heart, "I am not my own, I belong to Jesus," and trust His plan for you today?
🙌Conclusion: God Will Make a Way
🙌Conclusion: God Will Make a Way
To put God first means to live like you belong to Him. It means remembering He is all-powerful, trusting His fatherly plan, and obeying Him out of love.
So, choose to pray instead of panic. Trust God’s power instead of your own. When you put Him first, everything else will fall into place—because you belong to Him.
🗣️Truth to Remember: "When we put God first, everything else falls into place, because we belong to Him."
🙏 Simple Prayer Father, thank you for being the God who can do impossible things. Thank you that I belong to Jesus. Help me to trust You and obey You. Today, I give my fears and my problems to You. Help me to put You first in everything I do. Help me to trust You, even when I can’t see the way. I believe you are working for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
