Romans 6:15-23

Pray, read Scripture
Opening… talk about the week , new software logos. reminded of Romans 8:28” For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed in us”
V.15
as we start this section Paul presents this question again just like the beginning of the chapter
one commentary said that in the Greek in verse 1 Paul was talking about habitual sin and here in verse 15 he is talking about occasional sin that should we sin and which the answer to should we habitually sin or occasionally sin since we are under grace is still no
Paul is saying let me tell you something brother yes we are under grace but that doesn’t just give us an excuse to sin
you’ll here this today from many professing Christians that its okay I’m Forgiven or God will just Forgive me .… but we shouldn’t abuse this grace and Christ came to free us from sin not so we could continue in our sin remember last week, look back to verse 14
sin has no dominion over us right we are free from it but that doesn’t mean we should jump back in and continue sinning and living like we did before Christ
look at what Paul says in Galatians 2:20 “ I have been crucified with Christ . It is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives in me, and the life I now live in the flesh I live in the flesh , I live by faith in the Son of God, who love me and gave Himself for me.”
V.16
Paul uses this simple analogy here that we can all understand. especially to the group he as writing to here many of the population in the Roman church would have been made up of some type of slaves, this is also pointed out in verse 19 saying he is using something simple for them to understand. — whoever we present ourselves to as obedient slaves you are slaves to that thing— even though we are free we are still in the flesh and we are still tempted. we have freedom to not do it but you can still become and present yourselves a slave to sin just as much as presenting yourself a slave to God -Galatians 5:13-18
you can put the chains back on yourself and from experience and many of you an attest once you give yourself over to sin once its so much easier to do it again and then again
even though we are in Christ we can walk right back into a cell ourselves with sin. and you will see many believer who would still struggle and live as though they are not free from it but we are yes there is still a battle with the flesh there.
V. 17
Paul is thanking God that they were once slaves but have become obedient from the heart right by faith saved by faith from the teaching the gospel which they where committed
V.18
now past tense set free from sin you became slaves of righteousness - now righteousness is your boss so serve righteousness instead of sin.
V.19
Paul is speaking in humans terms making it simple for us because of our natural limitations
Jesus said right our flesh is weak the spirit is willing but the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak
just like we presented you members as slaves to …to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness notice here as we should all now sin grows sin just will lead to more sin. "Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay" — then he says there now present your members to slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification others might say holiness
you can see the power here in our presenting ourselves as slaves to righteousness lead to more righteousness sanctification or Holiness.
here there is the tension we are totally free from sin in Christ but we are fighting with the fact that we can put ourselves in bondage by giving in to sin
Pastor Mike Winger states we know what its like to not have to sin now that we are in Christ but the yield to sin and feel the bondage of that again . Romans 6 is explaining that tension of this but we should always remember we are free indeed in Christ and we should recon the old man dead
What Paul is teaching is a daily battle its about applying this to our lives. Jesus said in Luke 9:23 “ Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” we have to present our members as slavers of righteousness present ourselves to God, Submit to Him deny ourselves and pick up our cross and follow Him daily for the rest of our lives
V. 20
when you were slaves to sin righteousness had no power over you, but now in Christ its should be the opposite Sin should have no power over you and it doesn’t in Christ we are free right.
V.21
what fruit were you getting from the things you were now ashamed!
what fruit what good things came of those thing right. its not a badge of honor
talk about those who don’t have some huge sin life back story be grateful for that
most of these things lead to brokenness, shame, heartache all bad things
we can ask what good what fruit comes from sin
Paul says end of those things is death right
V.22
now that we are free and slaves to God the fruit we get leads to sanctification and its end is eternal life
V. 23
Paul closes here with this powerful statement
sins wages = death
but big BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
gospel for new
call for Believers to apply this present ourselves as slaves to Christ
alter call and pray
