Story

Going into my Junior year of High School its about week three of football season and our starting QB got hurt and so we bring up the JV QB to play and one day during practice he was talking so much crap and no one really liked him a ton and so as an Offense line we decided just to let the D line through and my guy got so humbled and absolutely crushed. and two things were learned that day. 1 never disrespect your o-line especially as the QB and two when in division nothing works, without the whole team working as a unit it falls apart. and the same goes for the church. Without every part working in unity it falls apart. This is one of the first struggles of the early Church and we are going to walk through that this morning. We will be in Acts 6:1-2. In this moment of scripture the Church has not grown outside of Jerusalem and we see two groups the Hebrew and the Hellenists Christians. The Hebrew Christians would be your traditional Jews and stuck to the Jewish culture and Hellenists were defined as Jews that followed a more Greek culture so as you can imagine there was conflict between them. so picking up in Acts chapter 6 verse 1
Point 1: We are called to find the need
Acts 6:1 ESV
1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists…
(Stop at the word “COMPLAINT”) I just want to stop here and highlight the word complaint. How many times do we walk into Church complaining like why do we have to be here so early, or man I wish they would just play this song. Im guilty of that, and one thing I just want to say to that and something that the early Church had to learn is its not about you. This is what the early church struggled with. lets keep reading “a complaint…
Acts 6:1–2 ESV
1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
lets focus in on this last sentence “it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables” this verse right here shows the importance of spotting the need. The apostles realize that it is important to serve the widows but they also acknowledge that it is equally important to keep preaching the word of God. Part of finding the need is listening to the Holy Spirit, when I was in High School one of the most convicting things for me was not being obedient to the Holy Spirit. I don’t know if I am the only one but on a daily basis I would see needs of other people on my school camps driving around town and I would just pass by them and it was so convicting to me because I new I was called to be a Paster and yet I just passed by this man on the side of the road with a flat tire who was in need
This is so important in our lives to understand because this shows that no spot in the church is more important than the next. Me up here preaching to you guys in not more important than the first impressions team that greets you guys or the prayer team that prayed over all your seats this morning. what Im trying to get at is there are so many needs in the church and we are called to find and fill that need which brings me to my next point.
Point 1: we are called to find the need
Point 2: we are called to fill that need
Acts 6:3–4 ESV
3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
This church exposes the need for service, as the early church began to grow the apostles no longer could personally care for every part of the church which is what is address in verse one. It is important because we can address the problem that we are able to identify the problem, in the early church it was Hellenistic widows being neglected. Well your probably thinking what does this have to do with me, well in the church there are hundreds of service opportunities that need our help.
A little historical background here the “daily distribution” is a Jewish law that was used to take care of all the widows
