Opening Prayer

Setting the Stage

Point 1

Point 1

But, we see Him give an explanation for what He is telling them
John 14:25–26 ESV
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
TheI’m teaching you all that you need to know.
And, a specific, apostolic promise that we have here…
Is that the HS will teach them all things that pertain to Christ from the OT.
How it all relates to Him and is fulfilled in Him…
And, what that means for the people of God.
And, that HS will bring to their remembrance all that Christ taught…
So, that they can write the God-breathed Word of God, which is the NT.

The Inspired, Trustworthy Word

D.A. Carson says thisJohn’s purpose in this verse is not to explain how readers at the end of the first century may be taught by the Spirit, but to explain to readers at the end of the first century how the first witnesses, the first disciples, came to an accurate and full understanding of the truth of Jesus Christ.
The Spirit’s ministry in this respect was not to bring qualitatively new revelation, but to complete, to fill out, the revelation brought by Jesus himself.
IOW, Jesus is telling the eleven that they will understand it all after the resurrection because of the giving of the HS by the Father.
And, a specific gift to the Apostles will be an accurate understanding of Christ and His covenant.
And, John is recording for his readers to understand how they have an trustworthy record of Christ and His covenant.
This is how we can have an infallible, inerrant, trustworthy Bible.
Because of the HS’s work in the lives of the Apostles.

Point 2

Point 3

Let’s think about this...

I’ve said this, or something like it in several recent sermons
# 2 - The Gospel calling out the Elect of God through the power of the gospel preached as the triumphant work of God in the Nations.
I want to be clear that I do not mean, nor does the Bible teach that there are justified people waiting for the gospel to be preached so they can respond.
Before the new birth, we are dead in our trespasses and sins.
Before the new birth, we are children of wrath.
There must be a moment in time, in this life, that a person hears/reads the gospel, understands the gospel, and repents and believes upon Christ…
In order for God to declare them justified/blameless.
1689 2LBC - Chapter 11; Section 4From all eternity God decreed to justify all the elect, and in the fullness of time Christ died for their sins and rose again for their justification. Nevertheless, they are not justified personally until the Holy Spirit actually applies Christ to them at the proper time.
There are elect from the foundation of the world.
But, you must repent and believe to be justified.
And, that is something that takes place at a moment in time in history.
The gospel call is to repent and believe and be justified.
Anything outside of that is to take biblical truth to human philosophical conclusions that do not agree with Scripture.
And, we have to be very careful to not do that.
Let God’s Word stand on God’s Word.
Let our faith stand on God’s Word, nothing more.
