Bible Passage: Proverbs 7:1–5, Proverbs 25:28, Proverbs 29:18
Summary: These passages emphasize the importance of wisdom and the need to guard our hearts against temptation, highlighting various aspects of God's love as a guiding principle.
Application: This sermon can encourage Christians to actively seek God's wisdom in their daily lives and understand how His love empowers them to resist temptation and maintain purity in their thoughts and actions.
Teaching: The sermon will teach that God's love provides both the motivation and strength necessary to navigate life's temptations, urging listeners to prioritize wisdom and discernment in their choices.
How this passage could point to Christ: Throughout the Scriptures, Christ embodies wisdom, teaching us how to live in accordance with God's will. His sacrificial love empowers us to resist against our inclinations toward sin, ultimately leading us to a life of righteousness.
“Verdict before performance” Imagine life as a courtroom, where we are constantly trying to please either ourselves, others or God based off of our performance. Day in and Day out we enter the courtroom, winning some days and losing others. “Did I pray today, How many people have I led to christ, How good did I sound during worship, Did anyone notice me reading my bible?”
But imagine an amazing lawyer walked in and represented you. He closes the case and gives you a winning verdict. No more court cases
No more performances
Just a verdict
The verdict is. FORGIVEN.
How many of us enter the courtroom again?
Big Idea: Understanding and embracing God's love equips us to guard our hearts and live according to His wisdom, preventing destruction and leading us toward fulfillment.
1. Safeguard with Scripture
1. Safeguard with Scripture
Proverbs 7:1–5 “My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend, to keep you from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words.”
begin by emphasizing how God's love offers wisdom and commandments as a safeguard for our hearts.
In the early 1900s, a ship called the Titanic was touted as 'unsinkable'. Tragically, after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage, it sank. This disaster serves as a stark reminder of the importance of heeding warnings and following sound advice. God's commandments are like lifeboats, designed to navigate us through the treacherous waters of life and safeguard our journey. Ignoring them can lead to disaster, just like the Titanic's fate.
“My commandments” “keep” “treasure”
WALK
Text is anchored in a parallel to the biblical law and covenant
Gods covenant with Israel - Faithful, intimate, marriage
Israel with God - unfaithful, ungrateful, rebellious
Jeremiah 3:2–6 “Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see! Where have you not been ravished? By the waysides you have sat awaiting lovers like an Arab in the wilderness. You have polluted the land with your vile whoredom. Therefore the showers have been withheld, and the spring rain has not come; yet you have the forehead of a whore; you refuse to be ashamed. Have you not just now called to me, ‘My father, you are the friend of my youth— will he be angry forever, will he be indignant to the end?’ Behold, you have spoken, but you have done all the evil that you could.” The Lord said to me in the days of King Josiah: “Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there played the whore?”
So, God offers obedience to his commands and laws as protection from infidelity with the “adulterous woman of your life” (Porn, Food, Greed, Money, Dreams, Adultery, Anxiety, Rage, Minsitry etc)
These verses advocate storing His words within and applying them as protection against temptation.
This reflects the big idea that encouraging listeners to embrace God's teachings will help them resist actions and thoughts that lead to destruction.
The main hinge on which faith turns is this: we must not imagine that the Lord’s promises are true objectively but not in our experience. We must make them ours by embracing them in our hearts.
John Calvin (French Reformer)
So unlike most of the world lies to you about being a “christian” being able to be one foot in and one foot out, it is not so with God. You CANNOT separate Christianity and your personal/work life.
Additionally, highlighting Christ's embodiment of wisdom can reinforce how His love guides and strengthens us.
2. Secure with Self-control
2. Secure with Self-control
Proverbs 25:28 “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
an unguarded heart resembles a city without walls, vulnerable and exposed to spiritual attacks.
It is either Christ or chaos.
David Lloyd-George
Do you have an inconsistent spiritual life if you even have one at all? GET A LIFE
The application of this can urge listeners to build 'walls' of wisdom and discipline as a defence mechanism, empowered by God's love.
By grounding ourselves in that love, symbolized through Christ's wisdom, we find the strength to resist sinful inclinations.
3. See with Spiritual Vision
3. See with Spiritual Vision
Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.”
conclude with the idea that vision or revelation is crucial for avoiding spiritual chaos.
What is the purpose of my life Lorenzo?
1 Peter 2:15–17 “For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”
God seeks out those who are willing that their lives should be fashioned according to His own grace and love. He sifts out those who cannot see God’s purpose and design for our blessing.73
A. W. Tozer
The result of the transforming, sanctifying ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives is just this: that we are enabled to love one another with the same kind of love that God loves us.
Timothy George
A lack of divine guidance leads us astray, but when our lives are driven by God's love, manifested through His divine revelation, we find direction and purpose.
“IT is either Christ or Chaos” - David Lloyd George
seeking this vision reinforces the big idea of living wisely through His love, leading to fulfillment and righteousness.
APPLICATION
If you find your home environment filled with tension and conflict, anchoring in Christ could bring peace. Set aside a nightly ritual of prayer and reflection with your family. This could involve sharing a scripture that speaks to you, discussing its meaning, and praying together. This practice not only reorients everyone’s hearts towards Christ but also fosters unity and understanding at home. A solid commitment to this will help you all face daily struggles with a calmer spirit.
