The scriptural passages in Daniel 10:21 and Daniel 12:1 indicate the presence of an elohim, specifically Michael, who is designated as the protector of Israel. This divine assignment parallels the biblical narrative in Deuteronomy 32:8-9, where elohim (sons of gods) are appointed over various nations as a consequence of their transgressions at Babel, as described in Genesis 10-11. The question arises: Why did Israel experience the governance of elohim, typically associated with Gentile nations, when Yahweh was intended to be their sovereign ruler? The answer is rooted in Yahweh's covenantal warnings. Yahweh forewarned Israel that the day they forsake their steadfast love for Him would be the day He would withdraw His presence from them (Ezekiel 1-3). Moreover, Yahweh cautioned that He would disperse them among the nations, subjecting them to the rule of the elohim assigned to those nations, thereby ceasing to be their direct ruler (Deuteronomy 4:27-28; 28:64-65; Nahum 1:8; Deuteronomy 30:7; Jeremiah 16:13; 1 Kings 14:15; Ezekiel 6:8-9). This theological perspective elucidates the conditional aspect of Yahweh's divine governance over Israel, contingent upon their unwavering fidelity to Him.

Opening Prayer

"Lord of Hosts, you alone assign rulers and shepherds over nations. Open our eyes today to see your justice, your covenant faithfulness, and the call to loyalty that brings restoration. May your Spirit guide our hearts and illuminate your Word, through Jesus our risen King. Amen."

Text: Daniel 10:21; Daniel 12:1

“But I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince.” (Daniel 10:21)
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people...” (Daniel 12:1)

Point 1: Heavenly Hierarchies and Human History

· Daniel 10:21–12:1 reveals Michael as an elohim figure, functioning not merely as an angel, but as a national protector within Yahweh’s divine administration.
· This aligns with Deuteronomy 32:8–9 (LXX): after Babel, Yahweh apportioned the nations to sons of God, reserving Israel as his inheritance.
· Israel is thus not ruled by a delegated elohim like the nations—but by Yahweh himself, a sign of divine intimacy and covenant favor.
The takeaway: Michael’s role isn't accidental—it reflects a divine government that responds to covenant loyalty. When Israel stood faithful, Yahweh directly governed them. Michael’s emergence as a protector signals something has shifted.

Point 2: Covenant Broken, Presence Withdrawn

Throughout the prophets, Yahweh warned Israel that rejection of his hesed—steadfast love—would result in exile and separation.
See Ezekiel 1–3: the glory departs from the Temple as Yahweh withdraws.
· Deuteronomy 4:27–28; 28:64–65: dispersion among nations, where other elohim reign.
· Jeremiah 16:13 and 1 Kings 14:15: exile is not just physical—it signals spiritual subjection.
· Ezekiel 6:8–9: only through repentance could the covenant be restored.
The takeaway: Divine governance is conditional on loyalty. The withdrawal of Yahweh's rule is a consequence—not a contradiction—of his justice.

Point 3: Michael Arises—Not to Replace Yahweh, But to Reflect Him

· Daniel 12:1 shows Michael “arising” in the last days—defending Israel in a time of great distress.
· This arising mirrors divine movements in OT:
o Numbers 10:35, Psalm 68:1 — “Let God arise and His enemies be scattered.”
o Michael stands because Yahweh has appointed him to enact protection in a moment when Israel is being refined.
· His arising is not a sign of abandonment, but of delegated mercy—a guardian in the absence of direct reign.
The takeaway: Even amid judgment, Yahweh leaves a witness. Michael is both warrior and assurance.

Point 4: Faithfulness Restores Governance

The prophets foresaw a day when Yahweh would gather his people back—not only geographically, but spiritually:
· Deuteronomy 30:7, Nahum 1:8 — evil powers will be defeated.
· Michael’s final intervention is a signal of eschatological reversal: the elohim of the nations fall, and Yahweh reclaims his people.
· This climaxes in Jesus, whose resurrection (linked with qumah / anasta) is the ultimate arising against the powers (cf. Colossians 2:15, Ephesians 1:20–21, Philippians 2:9–11).
The takeaway: Faithfulness doesn’t just restore divine favor—it invites resurrection power and cosmic restoration.

Closing Prayer

"Lord, in every season of exile and restoration, you remain faithful. We thank you for Michael, your servant, and for the greater Prince—Jesus—who has triumphed over every dominion. May we be found faithful, not only in worship but in unwavering love. Arise in us, O God, and scatter every rival claim over our hearts. In Christ’s name, Amen."
