1 Samuel 4:1-11

In God’s covenant relationship with his people, all battles were to be fought under God’s rules. God was to lead Israel out into battle. Also, in a crisis and before a battle, God was to be sought to determine if it was his will for Israel to fight or not.

The text never tells us that Samuel or the people asked for God’s direction or leadership! Israel instigated the matter (4:1b), but it wasn’t God’s battle; it wasn’t his time or his place.
