Intro
Isaac had the greatest father
Grew up in the shadow of a great man of faith
Passing torch from Abraham to Isaac… like Moses to Joshua
Isaac lived 180 years, longer than Abraham & Jacob, yet not much is said about Him
Most thorough passage on Isaac in the text
11 It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi.
The turning point
What you do will ultimately affect your children, either for good or bad
Children, do not follow your parents when they are wrong, but when they follow Christ… “follow me as I follow Christ”
Main character: God, how he is now the God of Isaac… we will see how God works
1. The Providence of God
1. The Providence of God
(1)
Famine
Genesis 12:10 “10 Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.”
Joseph — famine
Providence
Only if it’s a good thing
Could also be losing a job, a health diagnosis
Why?
To get our attention
Trials come in the NT!
To test faith! Like God did with Abraham & Isaac
To shape us! Romans 8:28–29 “28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son,…”
To move us! To a new place (me) or relationship
To bless us!
To discipline us!
How has the Lord moved us?
2. The Promise of God
2. The Promise of God
(2-6)
Headed to Egypt for food (blessing)
Why do we seek our blessings out here in the world? The majority of our blessings are heavenly! Above!
Promise of what?
Land
4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
Nation
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
Blessing
8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.”
9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
OBEDIENCE!!!!
Guide me oh thou great jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land
By faith, abraham left… by faith Isaac stayed
3. The Protection of God
3. The Protection of God
(7-11)
Lying
Where did he get this idea?
“Well I’d never do that”
You’ve never lied for sake of benefitting yourself or your situation?
Caressing His wife
Caressing — the hebrew word “to laugh”
Sarah laughing
ALSO — Ishmael “mocking” Isaac
An unbeliever exposes the sin of a believer
23 “But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.
God protects through Abimelech!!
12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
4. The Provision of God
4. The Provision of God
(12-22)
Envy
Christians should not be combative
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
Our Lord is the standard… spat upon, mocked, crucified… yet like a lamb before his shearers he opened not His mouth
Wells
In a desert, water is life
We just turn on a tap and it’s there!
Animals die, people die, crops die, everything dies… in war what would they do? Remove the water source
5. The Presence of God
5. The Presence of God
(23-25)
Beersheba: well of 7, or well of oath
Revelation of God produces worship of God
