God’s Covenants
God’s Covenants
Lexham Survey of Theology The Covenant of Creation
From the beginning, God has chosen in freedom and love to relate to his creation by way of covenant: a solemn, unilaterally forged bond and promise where God extends himself to the world graciously and in expectation of obedience. The covenant is no mere contract but a relationship where God neither distances himself from the world like a pagan deity nor overcomes the freedom of the creature like a puppet master. The
God has had a series of covenants starting with Adam
Covenants are legal obligations/ transactions between 2 parties
a car loan is a covenant
the bank loans you money to be paid back with interest your part is paying back at the right time and amount
If the obligation on your part is defaulted then the bank has the right to repossess the car
God with humanity has made covenants especially the Israelites
the first covenant is with all of humanity
And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may surely eat;
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it; for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
and this death was passed on to us
But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching to which you were given over,
and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
God then made a covenant with Noah
Then God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am giving to be between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations;
I put My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.
“And it will be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud,
and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.
“So the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
God then to Jeremiah confirmed this covenant
‘Do you not fear Me?’ declares Yahweh. ‘Do you not tremble in My presence? For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, A perpetual statute, so it cannot cross over it. Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it.
‘But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; They have turned aside and gone away.
‘They do not say in their heart, “Let us now fear Yahweh our God, Who gives rain in its season, Both the early rain and the late rain, Who keeps for us The appointed weeks of the harvest.”
‘Your iniquities have turned these away, And your sins have withheld good from you.
this is an unconditional covenant that God mad with mankind
then God made another unconditional covenant to Abraham
Abram was asleep when the covenant was made
And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
Yahweh God did not require anything from him
God Promised
next God made a covenant with Moses
‘So now then, if you will indeed listen to My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine;
and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words which Yahweh had commanded him.
And all the people answered together and said, “All that Yahweh has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to Yahweh.
the actual covenant is in
These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to cut with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He had cut with them at Horeb.
next God makes an unconditional covenant with David
this covenant will restore the rule of the earth
starting with David and ending with Jesus
“I have cut a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant,
I will establish your seed forever And build up your throne from generation to generation.” Selah.
“Do you not know that Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave the rule over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt?
Next and for today we have the
New Covenant
New Covenant
the old conditional covenant the Mosaic covenant
required the blood of sheep and bulls to cover the sin
they needed to obey Gods law exactly
once a year the High Priest would go into the holy place and put blood on the ark
all of these thing were required to hide their sin from God
but it was not good enough
For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.
Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have consciousness of sins?
But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
the law was for us a mirror to see how sinful we are
how very impossible it is to be holy like God is holy
so the new covenant was promised to the Israelite people
“Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
but what about us? do we also enjoy the blessings of the New covenant?
Therefore, remember that formerly you—the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands—
remember that you were at that time without Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups one and broke down the dividing wall of the partition
by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might create the two into one new man, making peace,
and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having in Himself put to death the enmity.
And He came and preached the good news of peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near;
for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,
Remember there were branches of the olive tree that is Israel that were broken off. so that we could be grafted in
we have looked at the nation Israel and how Jesus will apply the new covenant to them at the end of the tribulation where all of Israel will be saved
and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.”
“And this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.”
I want to concentrate on the new Covenant for us today
what Has been promised in this new covenant?
the law will be written on our hearts
“But this is the covenant which I will cut with the house of Israel after those days,” declares Yahweh: “I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
but this is also for those who have been grafted in
being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, ministered to by us, having been written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of hearts of flesh.
who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
in Jeremiah 31 34
“And they will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares Yahweh, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
We will know God
all of our sins will be forgiven
God is the one doing all of these things to us
but what is our part in this covenant?
Repent and believe
Repent
Turn from serving self to serving the King
Turn from sin to righteousness
Repentance and faith go hand in hand
To the Philippian Jailer he told to
believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
put your complete trust in Him to save you
Jesus is king -when we put our faith in Jesus we are bowing to his Lordship
We no longer live for ourselves but live for our Savior King
who gave us eternal life
