Introduction

Mark 14:61–64 ESV
61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.
Son of Man is Jesus’ favorite self-designation
86x in the NT - almost exclusively said by Jesus
General term for a person (Ezekiel)
Can stand for his humanity and transcendence in a single term
It’s never caused him any issues before this
Connects it to Christ
Seated at the right hand of power - Psalm 110
On the clouds of heaven
This is blasphemy now
Jesus is making a statement beyond “just some guy”
He’s connecting himself to a figure called the Son of Man in Daniel 7
To better understand Daniel 7 we need to review Daniel 2

Daniel 2

The vision of Daniel 2: A really scary statue
Nebuchadnezzar dreams it
Head of Gold - Body of silver - Thighs of bronze - legs and feet or iron and iron mixed with clay
Four kingdoms being represented
Daniel 2:37–43 ESV
37 You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, 38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are the head of gold. 39 Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall break and crush all these. 41 And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage, but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay.
The four kingdoms are:
Babylon (Dan 2:38)
Persia (Dan 5:30-31)
Greece (Dan 8:20-22)
Rome (Dan 11:30)
And it all comes tumbling down when a stone crushes it
Daniel 2:44–45 ESV
44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever, 45 just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”
Consider the imagery of this dream
Why a scary and impressive statue made (mostly) of valuable materials?
Why a rock cut by no human hand?

Daniel 7

Daniel 7:1 ESV
1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter.
Who’s dream? Daniel’s
The first vision was how the kings of the world see themselves in comparison to the kingdom of God
Now we have a godly perspective on the nations
Daniel 7:2–8 ESV
2 Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 4 The first was like a lion and had eagles’ wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. 5 And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ 6 After this I looked, and behold, another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it. 7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
How do we know this is the same message as Daniel 2?
Four nations/Kings - Daniel 7:15-17
Four winged/headed Leopard - Dan 8:20-22
The feet of iron are now teeth of iron - Dan 7:7
The kingdoms are judged/crushed
Daniel 7:9–12 ESV
9 “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. 11 “I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
Instead of an impressive and valuable statue we have monsters
What about the stone that represented God’s kingdom?
Daniel 7:13–14 ESV
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
What stands out about this figure?
Clouds of heaven
Psalm 104:3 ESV
3 He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind;
Isaiah 19:1 ESV
1 An oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
Like a son of man
The nations are animals
What does it mean to be in the image of God? Dominion over the animals and creation
So what is Jesus claiming when he calls himself the Son of Man?
The prisoner is about to be made king
The kingdom is about to be established
He’s like a son of man, but he’s showing up in God’s ride
His enemies are about to be crushed
Luke 20:16–18 ESV
16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17 But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’? 18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

Suffering Like the Son of Man

Daniel isn’t just talking about Jesus
We’re in Daniel 7 as well
We inherit the kingdom with Jesus
Daniel 7:15–18 ESV
15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things. 17 ‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’
Daniel 7:27 ESV
27 And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’
Who inherits the kingdom?
The son of Man? Jesus?
Or do the saints of the Most high?
1 Corinthians 6:2 ESV
2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases?
Understand what happens before the kingdom is inherited
Daniel 7:21–22 ESV
21 As I looked, this horn made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom.
Of those 86x that son of man is used, 26 are in the context of suffering
Mark 8:29–31 ESV
29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. 31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
2 Timothy 2:11–13 ESV
11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
Romans 8:16–17 ESV
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
